Silent Storm Gold Review

Silent Storm Gold
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Combining the over-the-top fiction found in some World War 2 based comics and a combat system similar to that of the Fallout games, Silent Storm succeeds in being a very enjoyable experience with a few questionable gameplay decisions.
Silent Storm starts out by letting you customize the central character of your team, in other words your avatar. You can choose to be any of the classes available in the game: Scout, Soldier, Medic, Engineer or Grenadier and what side of the conflict to be in. All classes can partake in combat or perform any of the actions available but only those specialized in a certain area may increase their skills in said area substantially. Skills are raised through use during missions along with the opportunity to earn medals for your actions.
The graphics in Silent Storm are decent, while there isn't much that will impress they are very adequate for an RPG/Strategy hybrid. The missions are varied enough in scenery to keep things from getting monotonous. The sound never stood out much to me, but the effects that are available also feel adequate. The voice acting can at times seem amateurish but the exaggerated accents fit in nicely with the theme. The musical score is the typical military selection that you can expect from any game with such a theme. From pounding drums to solemn melodies, they can all be found among the soundtrack.
The weapons available to you range from guns, knives and explosives to laser weapons available in later missions. This brings me to another aspect of combat, your main source of new armament for you squad will be found during the game's missions. While you can stock up on some basic weapons shortly after your first mission in Silent Storm, you will find that the more advanced weapons are used by the enemy and can be picked up once they are dead or disarmed. During Sentinels things change a bit as you can purchase an ever increasing variety of weapons as you progress.
The expansion to Silent Storm, Sentinels, is included in this package and worth a look. The game takes place after World War 2 and you are now a mercenary that gets an opportunity to work for a peace-keeping organization called The Sentinels. The combat and much of the gameplay remain the same as in the original, but you will not be able to continue using the same character you developed in the previous storyline.
"Sentinels" does introduce some gameplay changes that make sense within the context of the story. No longer will your only opportunity to increase a skill be on the battlefield, now you can train them up for a price while at headquarters. This is not the only major gameplay change introduced in the expansion as now to add additional members to your squad you will have to hire them at an increased cost for the more experienced sentinels available.
One of the questionable gameplay decisions happens to be the addition of Panzerkleins later on in both storylines. The shift in the action is so abrupt that it changes the mechanics of the game in a big way. From having to think ahead and plan out your assault, as well as having plenty of opportunity to use all of your squad's varied skills during a mission, it becomes an exercise in brute force. As soon as you obtain Panzerkleins for some of your squad you can blast your way through any level, the only thing keeping you from blasting through the enemy ranks unchallenged are the opposing Panzerkleins. Another questionable decision was that of making most of the terrain destructible. While in theory a very sound choice given the setting and subject matter, in practice it can become a bit of a hindrance if by chance you happen to blow away certain parts of the terrain and cut off access to the rest of the level for your Panzerkleins, which proceeding without in some cases can be near impossible due to enemy Panzerkleins.
As with most games translated to English there are some typos to be found. I would be willing to forgive these minor oversights if I did not feel that the game was already a quality product developed with some scrutiny, something which is not reflected in the sloppy translation. These minor complaints have become pet peeves for some fans of the game but in no way should keep you from giving it a try. As of this writing the "Gold Edition" is a bargain and its contents are well worth the money.

Half Life 1 (Jewel Case) Review

Half Life 1 (Jewel Case)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Half Life is a great game, completely revolutionized the shooter-on-rails style game. I generally don't like those types of games, because the game play is limited... it's just repetition really... then the enemies get stronger.
So, personally, i get bored with these games if the terrain and environments don't change much, or if there isn't alot of strategizing needed. Shoot-outs are boring to me, because eventually you know you'll get good enough to beat it, it's not really mentally taxing.
Beyond that, it's great. the monsters are great, the story is compelling, the levels are well constructed, the pace is super fast and intense and heart-pounding. I opften had to put it down because it was just too intense, i needed a break.
Way better than HL2 despite the graphical differences.
get it.

Wizardry 8 Review

Wizardry 8
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Wizardry is epic.
This reviewer is 23 and has played many, many role-playing games. After a while, you become jaded, and get picky about your likes and dislikes. Sometimes games seem to just blend into one another and they aren't all that unique and distinguishable.
This one is different. It has to be - it is expected. It's a Sir-Tech game, after all. It's Wizardry.
In the 1980s, the big three were Wizardry, Ultima, and Might and Magic. I've always felt Wizardry was king of 3d, Ultima of top-down/isometric, and Might and Magic was just a runner-up.
Wizardry is "classic" or "old-school." There is (of course) an excellent story, above-average music, fine gameplay, and decent graphics (the 3d engine is impressive - it draws you in but I'll leave it at "good" and not "amazing") - the monsters are the best graphics in the game with their animations - and they are awesome. Couldn't get much better there. But what makes Wizardry 8 classic are not these features (enjoyable as they are)...
Wizardry 8 is about characters - the essence of role-playing. It features extensive character generation (and brings back the "good ol' days" before fast-food generation of bland characters became standard. There are so many races and classes, so many combinations to try, so many statistics to become involved with (should I allocate points towards Wizardry to improve my mages' spell points, or stock points to make less of his spells fail? should I have my rogue become an expert lock-picker or better at pickpocketing first? or should I put points in other places...) Fighters can get lots of strength, Priests piety, etc. There are many standard attributes (strength, intelligence, piety, vitality, dexterity, speed, senses, etc), and then combat categories to put points in -- close combat, ranged combat, dual strike -- weapons: from bows and slings to maces and swords and axes -- to characteristics like mythology (the higher the more you know about your enemies), artifacts (exactly what is this cloak I just picked up and what does it do?), to scouting ("monsters approaching!!") This process is extremely interesting and sucks you in whenever you advance levels. After all, you have six characters to flesh out and differentiate. Character generation in the first place is great.
This is the essence of why Wizardry is the best CRPG. You completely control all levels of your characters (you form a party of six with optional NPCs being recruited later). You pick your characters' pictures, statistics, names, and even personalities. You literally create personal roles to play for hours and hours (and hours).
A side note on personalities - they are awesome. There are personalities to pick for each character such as aggressive, kindly, chaotic, eccentric (definitely one of the most entertaining), cunning, and laidback. Once chosen, your characters speak tons and tons of lines of dialogue echoing their personalities. The eccentric mage (if you so choose), may refer to himself in third-person. Wonderful. Lines are spoken throughout the game in all instances - just adventuring, combat, winning a battle, someone dying (comments on who has dibs on a dead character's stuff is pretty funny), a great attack made, a miscast spell that affects your party - our hero has made a horrible mistake..
The combat is also great. Wizardry is combat-intensive. It is generally turn-based (but can be continuous) -- you pick your characters' options a round starts - monsters go, you go - determined by speed, level, etc. It involves elements of strategy, from setting up, to choosing actions for your characters and watching them unfold after your options are chosen. Many classes can cast spells ranging from affecting a single enemy to a group - classics such as fireball and magic missiles - to spells that affect conditions of monsters: nauseate them with Noxious Fumes, make them go nuts with Insanity, freeze them with Web...and enemies are intelligent. They will circle your party if they can to attack your lowly mage hiding in the back. Try working your way out of that one...
Experience is gained, levels are upped, points for statistics are distributed...all while adventuring in a wonderful world with great people. The NPCs were labored over. They all have unique voices and personalities as well, and respond to questions you ask via either keywords typed in or selected from their dialogue or a keyword box. It reminds me of talking to people in real life - a favorite is a woman in the first town, very Midwest and small town who is really nice to you and loves to gossip. Reminds me of an aunt in Indiana I have. NPCs voice their reactions to events in the world and have opinions on just about any topic you can think of asking them about. The combination of EXCELLENT (EXCELLENT!!!) voice-acting and writing make these interactions extremely enjoyable. They really add to the atmosphere of the game.
From the graphics, to writing, gameplay, combat, voice-acting, storyline, character interaction, even interface (yes, it is one of the best ever - easy to use, uncomplicated to learn, logical), this game is hands-down a complete winner. It is the best CRPG I have ever played and I have played them for well over 15 years.
For those people who have played things such as Diablo, the Baldur's Gate series, Planescape:Torment, Icewind Dale, you will love this game. It includes the best elements from some of those games and makes them all even better in a 3D world. It also reminds me of the classics (Bard's Tale, The SSI Gold Box games, etc.) It has definitive elements of Wizardry that are completely unique - from combat to NPC interaction - and the whole thing put together will suck you in and hours will pass before you know it.
BUY THIS GAME!
The only thing you will regret is not having more time to play.

Wizardry 8 is an epic fantasy RPG that picks up where Wizardry 7: Crusaders of the Dark Savant left off. Fans of the series will recall that all hell had broken loose at the end of Wizardry 7. The Dark Savant had taken flight with a device called the Astral Dominae, an incredibly powerful artifact containing the secret of life itself. Following him are two powerful races, the T'Rang and the Umpani, as well as your own brave party of adventurers. Everyone is headed to Dominus, a world on the cusp of the Cosmic Circle, birthplace of the Astral Dominae, and home of the Cosmic Lords. Many paths will converge on Dominus, and many long-hidden secrets will be revealed.
Newcomers to the series will enjoy a special beginning just for those who haven't played the previous game. Whether you're an old Wizardry adventurer or new, you'll enjoy a unique, well-developed role-playing world of unusual depth and freedom. The game is not strictly linear: if you're smart enough and tough enough, you can go wherever you want. You can team up with some of the factions you'll meet--and then double-cross them, if it suits your fancy.

PC-GUILD WARS PLATINUM Review

PC-GUILD WARS PLATINUM
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Alright, I've played quite a few MMORPGs in my day, some with monthly subscriptions and others being free and I have to say, Guild Wars is better than anything I've played so far.
I started playing on recommendation from my boyfriend and at first I was really skeptic but after creating my first character and diving into the Prophecies campaign, I was not disappointed. I loved the feeling of the different towns and how you could choose to just go into the field with just yourself and a few NPCs or feeling froggy enough you could team up with other people. I also loved how you could kneel (literally) at the statues of the game's Gods and the avatars of the gods would come down and bestow upon you blessings and enchantments for a few gold coins.
Although the level cap is only 20, that's only the beginning of the game. After level 20, you still obtain experience points to get more skill points for your character. Not to mention at that point, you can then start training to get your Elite Skills and Elite armor sets.
And I have to say I'm not really into PvP, but I got more into it the more I played Guild Wars. You have the option in Guild Wars to PvP with NPCs or to go up against other players and vice versa. You also get PvP specific NPC characters and Heroes to add to your party.
I would definately recommend Guild Wars to other RPGs lovers out there.

SIN Episodes: Emergence DVD Review

SIN Episodes: Emergence DVD
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When John Blade wakes up from a deep sleep, the last thing he expects to see looming over him is his archenemy, Elexis Sinclaire, also known as "Mother Nature". Elexis is the power-mad CEO of SinTek, a genetic research corporation that makes Microsoft look like a dimestore. In the past she has plotted to accelerate human evolution at a faster pace than God allows and her mutations got a little out of hand and started killing people. It looks like she's back to her old tricks again and this time she's enlisted a drug lord named Viktor Radek in an as yet secret plan. And what strange substance has Elexis injected into Blade? It's up to John and his newest partner-in-training, the sexy but inexperienced Jessica Boone to stop this evil duo and save not only Freeport City, but the human race!
Straight-up, Sin is a first person shooter, and a pretty average one at that. That doesn't mean it wasn't fun, but besides the improved graphics, how far is this removed from the first Doom game? The graphics are pretty good but not really that stunning, especially when it comes to outdoor scenes. Where Sin really shines is in combat. That's when the adrenaline begins to pump, even though there's not a lot variety of weapon choice. The keyboard controls were not really ideal, as I found Blade getting stuck on deskchairs, or sliding off ledges when he was supposed to jump forward. The game pulls a fast one by offering you a quick save whenever you want, but if you die, you simply go to the last checkpoint regardless of what point you saved your game, so I felt the "Quick Save" was a lie. Something I enjoyed about the game was the sense of danger and exploration. I think this is good start to a nine episode series, IF they can solve the save mirage, and offer more support for a joystick. Also, add more weapons. The only other complaint I have is the laborious process of installing the game. The setup and verification of your game disk is done by "Steam", some shadow organization that watches over your every move when you play Sin, a software which is not very simple to uninstall.

Atari: The 80 Classic Games in One (Jewel Case) Review

Atari: The 80 Classic Games in One (Jewel Case)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you grew up in the '70s, like I did, and spent too much time, and too much money in the arcades, then you can't go wrong with this! For less than a Starbuck's cappucino, you get 18 of Atari's CLASSIC arcade games. And when I say ARCADE, I mean the EXACT SAME GAMES you pumped SO MANY quarters into!
Asteroids
Asteroids Deluxe
Battlezone
Black Widow
Centipede
Millipede
Crystal Castle
Gravitar
Lunar Lander
Missile Command
Major Havoc
Liberator
Red Baron
Space Duel
Super Breakout
Tempest
Warlords
Pong
Those games alone are worth the price of admission, to me anyway. And infinitely more fun to waste time with than Solitaire, (talk about LAME!) The other 62+ games look to be mostly ports of old Atari 2600 games, which ARE sort of lame, even by 1980's standards. But I've spent a few hours (re-living my childhood) playing those as well.
If you're looking for cutting edge, 3D graphics, state-of-the-art video games, move on. But if you're looking for a cheap fun trip down memory lane, then you can't go wrong here.
Don't get me wrong, I love my 3D graphics card, but these games re-kindle that old visceral excitement, and instant gratification that has somehow been lost in today's world of "everything's-gotta-be-3D-or-else-it-sucks" gaming paradigm.
Regards,
Classic Fanatic

Dragon Age Origins: Ultimate Edition Review

Dragon Age Origins: Ultimate Edition
Average Reviews:

After spending nearly a day downloading this game, the installation failed at 70 percent. I looked it up and all sorts of people have been having this issue for over a year now and it's never been resolved. Apparently, it's due to corrupted RAR files in the download. I was finally able to circumvent the issue by downloading the game again, substituting good RAR files from the new download for the corrupted ones in the old download, and installing it from there. All in all, the process was way more work than I would have liked. Had I known about it beforehand, I would have just bought a physical copy of the game.
The game itself, however, is great! It runs perfectly. The story and structure are brilliant, the controls intuitive, the classic RPG feeling genuine, etc. I truly recommend this game if you're willing to suffer through some hassle downloading it.
I would have given this game five stars if not for the download process.

Arcanum: of Steamworks & Magick Obscura Review

Arcanum: of Steamworks and Magick Obscura
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Arcanum is a game that appeals to a certain audience. If you like figuring out alternate solutions to problems, you may enjoy this game. Fans of the Fallout games will find a similarly well-thought-out setting and sense of humor. Fans of complex RPGs will be delighted by the depth and length of the game.
If you thought Diablo was a great RPG, well, don't bother with Arcanum. The only thing they have in common is that you have a character that grows over time. Diablo was a linear hack-and-slash adventure with clearly defined characters and simple mechanics. Arcanum has a non-linear path and complex character options. Furthermore, if you try to bash through every situation, you will have your head handed to you, especially at the beginning of the game.
Specific likes: The setting, that of a fantasy realm going through an industrial revolution (with some Steampunk-like technology thrown in), is fantastic. The character creation options are varied and give you a great deal of control. The plot is long and involved. Some of the voice acting is quite good, and the background music is very appropriate, if a little monotonous at times. The system for using technology is a lot of fun. Characters can literally take bits and pieces of things and assemble them into everything from hand grenades to healing salves.
Specific dislikes: The combat system has a few odd points. Grenades and such somehow never harm you or your party, so you can throw them with impunity at folks standing right next to you. Critical hits and misses are ludicrously common, with sometimes drastic results, such as self-inflicted damage, dropped or damaged weapons, scarring or even crippled limbs. It reminds me of the old D&D Wandering Damage table some pundit proposed, with entries like, "Cut yourself shaving, consult limb loss table."
Graphics are pretty bland. You can't really tell your party members from people on the street -- although the clothes they wear do make a difference in appearance, at least. The graphics seem to be at about the same level as X-COM: UFO Defense in terms of utility, although they are far more detailed in Arcanum than in that game.
The interface for interacting with party members can be pretty frustrating. You can tell them what to do and what to use, but they have minds of their own, and sometimes they aren't so bright. They will quite willingly run between a gun and a target, and they pick up anything that might be lying around, including stones, old shoes, and bits of fluff. Sometimes, this is useful, but you'll find yourself scanning their inventories on a regular basis.
Overall, if you are in the target audience mentioned above, you can expect a four or even five star rating for this game. If you are not, then three would probably be more acurate for the average gamer, and those addicted to different genres that require a fast mouse and a short attention span will probably rate it as a two or less.

Arcanum is the first game to come from the development house Troika Games, LLC, started by former Fallout team members Tim Cain, Leonard Boyarsky, and Jason Anderson. This team takes the depth of gameplay and world-building in role-playing games to entirely new levels of realism and excitement.Arcanum creates a compelling new world where magic and technology coexist in an uneasy balance. As Arcanum opens, the mechanical age has only recently arrived in this ancient land where Humans, Elves, Dwarves, Orcs and other races have learned to survive in the new sprawling industrialized cities. But this radical shift from magic to technology has created a potentially explosive situation. As the townspeople and other thinkers begin mass production of light bulbs, batteries, eyeglasses and guns, the Mages grow leery. This tightly wound setting is the starting point from which the character must set out on his quest.Classless, point-based attribute system allows for limitless creativity in guiding your character's development.Complex stat system underlies every event taking place within Arcanum

Elven Legacy Review

Elven Legacy
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Please see my review of the prequel of this game, Fantasy Wars, for a nearly identical review (both games share the same game engine, graphics, sound, gameplay, overlapping storyline and characters to some extent).
First the basics:
Video - 4.5; Positives include generally crisp resolution in higher settings, excellent terrain. Negatives are include character models, which are less convincing as well as some cinematics. Based on the somewhat scantily clad Elven women, one has to wonder what is wrong with the Elven males that their race is dwindling...
Sound - 5; excellent sound and musical score. Music was appealing and seemed broadly "period correct" - whatever that is for a fantasy game!
Gameplay - 4.5; Positives include ease of play and user interface, which is very intutive, as well as in-game battle sequences and sounds (though you have to get close to the action to really hear the sounds, which is realistic, I suppose). Spells effects are decent, overall, though most of the actual impact on troops is marginal. With a couple of noted exceptions, the magic takes definite second stage to the battle elements. Unlike Fantasy Wars, the elves have more magic, and there are two kick-butt spells that are the fantasy equivalent of tactical nukes which they can employ - devastating to most troops when they are concentrated together, and decent visual and sound for the spell effect. No mushroom cloud, though.
Atmosphere - 4; I found the maps and story line to be engaging and immersive, within the limits of a turn-based wargame (v. a first person game). Landscapes and buildings were overall well done and evoked the right reactions.
Replayability - 3 (5); Not much, unless you want to play it again at a differnt difficulty level or try some different units or tactics since the overall storyline is the same.
Commentary: Overall, I found the game one of the more enjoyable and engaging fantasy wargames I have played in some time. I admit I strongly prefer turn-based wargames that are NOT RTS (Real Time Strategy - but actually have little strategy and are mostly just "gather resources/build structures/produce troops" efforts with little or no real military tactics or strategy). Elven Legacy is - refreshingly - NOT an RTS, but a thoughtful turn-based strategy/tactics game with NO resource gathering, NO structure building, and troops are purchased/recruited rather than produced in structures. The only resource is gold (money), which you get for accomplishing missions or taking ground in cities.
So if you like turn-based wargames, and a fantasy theme is up your alley, this is a great game (as is Fantasy Wars, the prequel to this game and using the same game engine). On the other hand, if you really like the RTS "gather/build/produce" games, Elven Legacy probably won't be what you are looking for.

.Hack: G.U., Vol. 2 - Reminisce
Average Reviews:

dot Hack has redefined RPG gaming by pitting players in an MMO simulation. The first four games were great, each title adding to the storyline. Think of it like getting a booster pack from a new set. Each set or game brings in new monsters, items, characters and storyline. But once you beat the game, it's not over, there are still tons of things left to do to bide the time until Part 3 comes out! Definitely a must play, just a shame that these games tend to fall under the radar!
A note to all the bad reviews this game has received from magazines. No, this game is not Halo, World of Warcraft, Gears of War or Zelda. That does not mean it is a bad game (GameInformer, I'm talking to you). Any gamer who has actually played the dot Hack series has loved it, which only leads me to conclude that the folks at these game magazines have not actually played the game, or at least did not play it very far. Dot Hack is anything but repetitive. Granted the levels are generated, the actual storyline is far from repetitive. Dark Cloud was another game with levels that were generated, and that game was awesome too! Just because the dungeons are not manually designed does not make this a bad game.

Counter-Strike 1 Anthology Review

Counter-Strike 1 Anthology
Average Reviews:

It is nice to be able to play a game that has a voice capability in game instead of having to deal with Ventrilo or Teamspeak. Also one thing i want to mention is when you buy this game here is a list of games that come with it and their ratings. (They dont tell you about a couple of them)
Counter Strike 1.6 (5 Stars)
Counter Strike Condition Zero (4 1/2 Stars)
Counter Strike Condition Zero Deleted Scenes (4 1/2 Stars)
Day Of Defeat 1.6 (4 Stars)
Deathmatch Classic (5 Stars)
Ricochet (2 Stars)
Counter Strike is the game that started it all. It is enjoyable to play and the graphics are fairly decent. If you want the most killer graphics then i suggest you get the Counter Strike Source Package. Condition Zero is a separate game not an addition pack. The reason i gave it 4 1/2 stars is because I have a slight problem of when i let go of a direction button (to go forward, backward, sideways). When i let go it keeps going for less than a second. Day Of Defeat 1.6 Is fun but some of the servers lag a lot. Deathmatch Classic is a really funny game. This is really old and it is funny to watch all these people walk around with frozen fake faces. Ricochet is an odd game of jumping on these pads and knocking people of the pads to me its pointless. All these games use the Steam platform which can be tedious. DEFINATLY DO NOT!!!!! BUY THIS GAME USED.It will not work. Also when you choose to join the 2000+ servers on CS 1.6 sometimes there is a server that has all these dumb pointless sounds that you have to download to join the server. Overall a neat game, even though it is old there are still tons of people who play it!

Arcanum : Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura
Average Reviews:

I couldn't in good conscience give this game 5 stars like the other reviewers. One thing to note as I kick this review off. This game does work with Windows 7 on my computer...with only a few hitches. There is a minor graphical glitch with the cursor that is easy to ignore for the most part. What wasn't easy to ignore was right toward the end of the game when I hit level 50 (the max level in the game) The game would crash every time. I had to go back to one of my older save games and replay a portion of the game and purposely avoid gaining experience.
With that out of the way I'm gonna do this old school pro and con review here to try to avoid being too long winded.
Pros
-Story is fairly interesting involving technology being introduced into a magical world
-Interacting with the NPC's is great, one of my favorite parts of the game, the dialogue trees are great and often humorous
-Lots of sidequests that flesh out the gameworld
Cons
-"real time" combat option is useless as it happens so fast you don't have time to do anything
-Graphics are bland, even for a game 10 years old
-You have to read a strategy guide if you want to make the most out of the game, there are a lot of nuances that you WILL miss if you just play through on your own
I noted the sidequests as a pro, but you need to be careful with them as there are enough that you could go a while ignoring the main story and forget what is going on.
You can be good or evil in this game (theres even an evil alternate ending), it actually reminds me a bit of Oblivion in the variety of gameplay, often the quests are varied and fun.
Being how old this game is there are modern games that do all this same stuff with more production value (Oblivion) But if you like lively NPC's to chat with and great humorous dialogue trees this is certainly one way to go.
