Darkspore Review

Alot of people are comparing this to Diablo II, but I don't really think thats fair. While Diablo 2 has 7 different playable characters there were many, many possible builds you could create. This game boasts 100 different playable heros, but there are really just 25 different heroes with a measly base attack, 2 abilities, a third 'genesis' ability that alternates depending on which of the 4 different color variations of a hero you are using, and a passive ability.
I included Torchlight in the title of my post because thats what the levels feel like. There are about 5 or 6 different stages with slight variations that you fight in. It really feels like a multiplayer Torchlight. They try to add a story, but its horribly explained in game and you're not really playing through it. A computer pops up every once in a while and gives you a history of stuff that happened, but it doesn't personally engage you.
Speaking of the multiplayer, if you're not the ideal level for a stage, you can go back to previous stages and play them again in hopes of getting better gear. Unfortunately, you will need to plan on doing that alone. In an effort to make it more "fun" to play with your friends, your hero will be nerfed to a point where you are substantially weaker than your friend, despite having far superior gear. Basically, only play with friends or never play with friends, because once you shoot ahead of them you will be at a huge disadvantage. The matchmaking system is pretty bad too, you may or may not get the level you want to play, and once the matchmaking system finds one person the game pretty much always starts after that. You can't tell it to always find four people or try to search a little longer.
Often times in Darkspore you will run across mini-bosses that are impossible to beat. They may spawn with an ability that limits the damage they can take and they regenerate. They can have up to 4 of these random abilities, and just these two alone can be nasty. You can't always flee from these enemies, as far as I can tell they will chase you indefinitely, and the portals the transport you through the area won't allow you to enter them with enemies nearby.
Darkspore was very fun playing through the first 24 levels (1-1 to 6-4), sadly after that, it starts getting very hard and oftentimes impossible to advance. A little bit of play-testing on the developers' parts before they released this game would have discovered the major problems the game has now. In my opinion, re-releasing a Diablo 2 with slightly better graphics than what it has now would blow this game away, and I would not advise my friends to buy this game. For 50 bucks, buy a real MMO. This game is only worth 20 in my opinion.

Homefront Review

Homefront

A little about my gaming experience, i've been playing PC FPS games since DOOM including Counter-Strike, all the PC Call of Duty games, all the PC Battlefield games, and so many more. I would consider myself a fair reviewer, I even found the 2010 Medal of Honor to have its redeeming qualities despite most others disliking it.
Prior to this games release I saw some promo material such as videos and the interactive website, which were masterfully done, to set the stage for what should have been a great game with an interesting story. Unfortunately, this was not the case.
First off, the graphics seem below par for the genre but are not horrible. The animation seems worse off though, as the way characters movement seem jerky in a way that is obnoxious and an eyesore.
Single-Player:
The game was noticeably short, clocking in at around 5 hours. The characters, environment, and story was surprisingly generic and the ending was an abrupt one that brought no closure. This was done on Normal difficulty by an experienced FPS player, so your mileage my vary. This was by no means an attempt at clearing it in a short time either, this included me dying at several places and reading several of the in-game history documents scattered around. While single-player campaign was surprisingly uninteresting given the great story they had to work with, it wasn't terrible. Even though the majority of it was bland it still had some fun moments.
Multi-Player:
This is the mode that I value the most in any FPS I buy as it is ultimately what I spend the most time playing. Homefront's take on multi-player has it's unique elements, such as aquiring Battle Points (BP) from doing actions such as killing an enemy or capturing an objective. This in-game currency and the only way to get power-ups such as RPGs, vehicles, remote-controlled attack drones, and such. One major issue with this system is that all items that destroy heavy vehicles are BP purchases. If you are stuck with low BP you can very easily be repeatedly killed or spawn camped by a helicopter with no way to destroy it.
The next major issue is sniping, in which the flaws of Homefront being console developed and ported to PC become very apparant. Players can start with a default sniper rifle which is semi-automatic with very little scope sway and recoil. In addition to this, it is a one shot kill to the body with no bullet drop. The combination of all these factors with the large maps makes it a sniping/camping nightmare. There is little skill needed to one shot kill someone from far away, as the sniper rifle has a high rate of fire with fairly low recoil.
There are many other smaller issues that I could go on about, but i'll try and shorten it into the all encompassing idea that Homefront just lacks polish. Everything seems rushed including balance issues and content. What could have been a great game got bogged down by poor implementation of ideas.
Bottom line:
Homefront does not stand up against any other quality FPS. Whether you are a fan of Call of Duty, Battlefield, Counterstrike, or any other FPS, you will probably find this game lacking in the aspect that makes that FPS series your favorite. Unless there is a major overhaul with future patches, I would not recommend this game to any FPS gamer.

Darkspore Review

Played both the Steam Beta of this game and the open Beta offered by EA and before they even released all the nuances of the game I fell in love. A great dungeon crawler game, with the added caveat that there is a squadding system that allows the play of up to 3 "heroes" on a single level. It starts out easy but as you approach level 3-4 and pass it get ready for some serious strategy play, item customization and co-op play should you wish to have some company. PVP system is pretty nice, only played a couple of games and got trounced, but wasn't in the pvp mindset just wanted to see what it offered. Has solid potential and hardcore gamers could find quite a nice niche in its gameplay style to forge the perfect squad and dominate kiddies all day. Like most dungeon crawlers it can be repetitive at times, but with the co-op play and the ability to make unique squads and unlock new "heroes" it can help wash off some of that tedium. If you were a fan of D2 or Torchlight I highly recommend this it may just become your new favorite hack-and-slash!

Counter-Strike 1 Anthology Review

Counter-Strike 1 Anthology

It is nice to be able to play a game that has a voice capability in game instead of having to deal with Ventrilo or Teamspeak. Also one thing i want to mention is when you buy this game here is a list of games that come with it and their ratings. (They dont tell you about a couple of them)
Counter Strike 1.6 (5 Stars)
Counter Strike Condition Zero (4 1/2 Stars)
Counter Strike Condition Zero Deleted Scenes (4 1/2 Stars)
Day Of Defeat 1.6 (4 Stars)
Deathmatch Classic (5 Stars)
Ricochet (2 Stars)
Counter Strike is the game that started it all. It is enjoyable to play and the graphics are fairly decent. If you want the most killer graphics then i suggest you get the Counter Strike Source Package. Condition Zero is a separate game not an addition pack. The reason i gave it 4 1/2 stars is because I have a slight problem of when i let go of a direction button (to go forward, backward, sideways). When i let go it keeps going for less than a second. Day Of Defeat 1.6 Is fun but some of the servers lag a lot. Deathmatch Classic is a really funny game. This is really old and it is funny to watch all these people walk around with frozen fake faces. Ricochet is an odd game of jumping on these pads and knocking people of the pads to me its pointless. All these games use the Steam platform which can be tedious. DEFINATLY DO NOT!!!!! BUY THIS GAME USED.It will not work. Also when you choose to join the 2000+ servers on CS 1.6 sometimes there is a server that has all these dumb pointless sounds that you have to download to join the server. Overall a neat game, even though it is old there are still tons of people who play it!

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam - Expansion Review

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam - Expansion
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have Bad Company 2 on Steam. When I purchased the Vietnam expansion on Amazon, I simply entered the code in the Bad Company 2 main menu and Vietnam was activated without any problems. All of the content for Vietnam was apparently in the last huge patch for Bad Company 2. Vietnam is multiplayer only so those looking for a single player game have been warned. Overall, Vietnam has a different feel from BC2. The maps are huge and open, each of them are unique. There are five multiplayer maps total and all of them take place outdoors. The jungle experience and scenery is captured perfectly in this expansion. I found myself getting shot by Vietcong in rice paddies and facing intense close combat fights on jungle paths. The downside to the openness of the maps is that you will have to deal with a lot of snipers, more so than in BC2.
There are about four unique weapons for each class and the perks attained in BC2 (magnum ammo, extended mags, vehicle upgrades) are available to use. Shooting and aiming with the weapons is more difficult with just iron sights as scopes have been removed (except for sniper rifles) as well as UAVs and other high-tech equipment. It seems like the weapons do more damage also. Its pretty intense when you are facing RPK machine guns and "thumper" grenade launchers in the jungle with a beat-up M-16. This game just feels gritty and realistic.
I'm enjoying this expansion, its much more challenging and realistic than BC2 and requires a fair amount of skill and teamwork. I definitely recommend it if you liked Bad Company 2.
