Painkiller Pandemonium Review

Painkiller Pandemonium
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When the original painkiller came out in 2005, it was a great shooter which focused on bringing back the arcade fun of games like Doom and Quake. Even six years later, the game holds up in the fun department despite it clearly showing its age graphically. The weapons still follow the concept of "stupid, but awesome" and killing hordes of dumb enemies doesn't get old. The expansion pack, Battle out of Hell, is a great addition to the original and adds a good few hours to the original game. Not to mention, though the original didn't really need it, an increase in difficulty. The stories in both these releases are forgettable, but the games don't focus on them too heavily and only use them as an excuse to shoot demons. If you want a blast from the past, you got it.
That, however, was just Painkiller: Black Edition.
The fan-mod turned official sequel, Painkiller: Overdose, is a decent follow-up to the original. The level design is a bit hit-or-miss when compared to the original. None of the original weapons return; however, many of the new weapons are reskinned versions, but they do play differently. For example, Overdose's shotgun can not fire immediately after freezing an enemy unlike the original and Overdose's equivalent to the stake gun, which fires nuclear waste, has a secondary fire similar to a flamethrower unlike the grenade launcher of the original. The story of Overdose is actually a step down from the original as it is not only a bit dumber with plot points such as the main character being a half-demon, half-angel, but presented in a worse fashion as it is done entirely in monologues that can last up to five minutes. Thankfully, there are only three cut scenes in the game. Which brings to the next complaint, Overdose is significantly shorter than the original with two less episodes than the original. It should also be mentioned the music lacks the same strength of the original and the one-liners can get old. Overall, Overdose isn't the best sequel, but it'll past the time and it's actually pretty impressive for something that was originally just a fan-mod.
Painkiller: Resurrection, which is also a fan-mod turned official sequel, is significantly less impressive. While the story is a little bit of a step-up in concept, it's implementation is not any better than the original with robotic voice acting and a weak main character. However, the comic style cutscenes are a lot better than Overdose's monologues. That was about all Resurrection did that was anything resembling a good game. It was so buggy that I needed to patch it out of the box to stop it from crashing on the loading screen for the first level. While Overdose's loading could take a while at about a minute at a half, Resurrection's loading screen can go on for six to seven minutes which is even worse when one accounts for the constant reloadings due to crashing. All of the weapons from the original painkiller returned in Resurrection without any alteration which is actually disappointing as it makes this sequel have trouble standing out. Level design can be a bit confusing at times as it lacks clear direction and certain obstacles might as well be puzzles with how hard they are to navigate around. It should also be noted the name of the first level was not spelled correctly which is just sloppy. All in all, Resurrection is the black sheep of the painkiller series as it does nothing to stand-out except for being the buggiest.
For the price, you get a good game and its expansion, a decent game and a bad game. This doesn't seem like a bad deal, but one could buy Painkiller: Black Edition and Painkiller: Overdose separately and only spend half as much as this purchase and, at the same time, avoid wasting hard drive space on Resurrection. As a warning for shooter fans, this is a title for people who are looking for a new Doom or Quake and might not appeal to the shooter fan that enjoys the call of duty or battlefield franchises.

Global Agenda Review

Global Agenda
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Global Agenda is great for several reasons. First off I would like to say that I've personally never seen a team thats so devoted to making great content for it's MMO after post production. All the updates and patches have always added something new and exciting. The patch 1.3 aka Sandstorm is going to be off the chain and is to be realeased in a couple days (note that its 04/22/2010 when I made this review). MOST OF THE FEATURES ARE FREE TO PLAY FOREVER EXCEPT FOR ONE THING. (It's impossible for me to cover everything in one review and actually have people read it, so I suggest going to [...] and checking out everything you can.)
There are roughly four types of combat:
PvE: A player joins a que (or with an already created group) and plays with a team totaling four players. The object is to blast your way through mutliple enemys, robotic and cybernetic, to face the final boss. The difficulty of the missions after easy and medium is much more potent and tactics and team communication are REQUIRED for succes. (the game comes with VOIP, but you can type statements too)
PvP: Comes in three different flavors
Agency vs Agency: Player made agencys vie for control of a territory and requires team resource management, diplomacy with other players and various other strategies. (THE ONLY THING YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR WITH A SUBSCRIPTION)
Mercenary: If your don't pay for the subscription then no prob, you can still experience most of the content you get in AvA. When you join this, you are basicaly setting yourself up as a mercenary, and you fight other players in roughly six game play modes which boil down to;Bombing the other guys base, controling an area, defending zones, and escorting resources. All require teamwork to succeed, and this is really were you get paid (in game).
Virtual Arena: If you just feel like testing that weapon you unlocked, or practicing your pvp skills with no consequence, then this is were you go. I must say that you should be wary the first time you are transported in, as noobs will be quickly dispatched lol.
The new 3.1 patch will also include several new gameplay modes plus new weps, armor, and tonnes of other things. But the biggest thing it will offer is a new open world to explore.

Alpha Prime Review

This is a completely on-rails shooter. No choice about which way to go; if you can open a door, that's the way you need to go and no worries about there being a better route some other way.
Difficulty is very uneven; some areas are totally easy while others are insanely difficult, even on the easiest setting. Enemies see you and know exactly where you are the second you pop up your little head. Finally I gave up and used cheat codes to plow through to the end.
Graphics are good overall, but can't carry a game by themselves.

Unreal Tournament 2004 Review

Unreal Tournament 2004
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
UT 2003 was a pretty good game, I played the demo for hours and hours, did the same with the full game and the same with Unreal Championship for Xbox. So when I got the UT 2004 demo for PC, I was pretty excited. But nothing could have prepared me for what I was about to experience. I immediately felt at home with the game, considering many of the weapons were the same, and much of the gameplay. But there was sooooo much more. So I played the demo everyday from the time it was released up to the time I received the full game. Believe it or not, playing that one stage in Onslaught for an entire month never got boring, that is just how great the game is. The full game however, is simply AMAZING!! The graphics are absolutely jaw-dropping, especially with the highest settings enabled (you need a powerful system to run this though). I don't think I've even seen graphics this great on any of the nexgen consoles. Also the stages are massive (mainly the Assault and Onsalught stages), its amazing to think of how much detail and creation when into the design of the stages. The sound in my opinion is also great. You can hear every little minute detail, and much of the music is good and suits the stage. The control is perfect, with the default settings being totally comfortable, allowing for maximum gameplay. Ahh yess, the gameplay. You thought Quake was good, you thought Halo was good, well they're pretty crappy compared to this game. The vehicles, the weapons, the bots, the entire style of the game, is simply outstanding. There is not enough to say about the vehicles. They put Halo's vehicles to shame. There is a perfect gun for every moment, each completely different from the other. The single player is exceptional for a multiplayer type game, and obviously the multiplayer aspect is fantastic, with up to 32 player online deathmatch, and no lag (with a proper connection). There are 10 modes of play, and about 100 levels. Then there's still the Unreal Editor which will allow you to create your own. There is also way too much that I cannot list here that you would just have to play and find out for yourself. I would actually go as far as to say this game is PERFECT. There is actually NOTHING wrong with it and EVERYTHING good. If you can overlook the extremely minor 'problem' of the 5.5 gig install, you'd be absolutely happy with your purchase. And at $40 retail, you cannot find a better videogame experience, period.

SIN Episodes: Emergence DVD Review

SIN Episodes: Emergence DVD
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When John Blade wakes up from a deep sleep, the last thing he expects to see looming over him is his archenemy, Elexis Sinclaire, also known as "Mother Nature". Elexis is the power-mad CEO of SinTek, a genetic research corporation that makes Microsoft look like a dimestore. In the past she has plotted to accelerate human evolution at a faster pace than God allows and her mutations got a little out of hand and started killing people. It looks like she's back to her old tricks again and this time she's enlisted a drug lord named Viktor Radek in an as yet secret plan. And what strange substance has Elexis injected into Blade? It's up to John and his newest partner-in-training, the sexy but inexperienced Jessica Boone to stop this evil duo and save not only Freeport City, but the human race!
Straight-up, Sin is a first person shooter, and a pretty average one at that. That doesn't mean it wasn't fun, but besides the improved graphics, how far is this removed from the first Doom game? The graphics are pretty good but not really that stunning, especially when it comes to outdoor scenes. Where Sin really shines is in combat. That's when the adrenaline begins to pump, even though there's not a lot variety of weapon choice. The keyboard controls were not really ideal, as I found Blade getting stuck on deskchairs, or sliding off ledges when he was supposed to jump forward. The game pulls a fast one by offering you a quick save whenever you want, but if you die, you simply go to the last checkpoint regardless of what point you saved your game, so I felt the "Quick Save" was a lie. Something I enjoyed about the game was the sense of danger and exploration. I think this is good start to a nine episode series, IF they can solve the save mirage, and offer more support for a joystick. Also, add more weapons. The only other complaint I have is the laborious process of installing the game. The setup and verification of your game disk is done by "Steam", some shadow organization that watches over your every move when you play Sin, a software which is not very simple to uninstall.

Front Mission Evolved Review

Front Mission Evolved
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A lot of the negative buzz about this game comes from established fans of the Front Mission franchise - myself having played nearly all of them including the brilliant Front Mission 5: Scars of the War. Some people are angry that the game is an action/TPS title, which is understandable to a degree, but two things to consider: 1) this is not the first action title or even TPS in the series (see: Gun Hazard, FM Alternative, FM Online) and 2) FM5 essentially 'ended' the series and wrapped up all plot points with a nice bow, so Square really was free to start anew with this game.
So with that out of the way, taking the game on its own merits, it's fantastic. Part of me wants to give it 4 stars, because it is not a perfect game, yet it has a hard-to-define appeal and substance that brings me back for more.
Take the plot, for example. While not even close to the mature, dramatic storytelling in Front Mission 5, Evolved has it's own panache and flair. To put it bluntly, it's kind of a B-grade mecha war story, copied poorly from an 80's mecha anime with a little Western touch. The plot is corny and sappy, but in an endearing and honest way, and though that may turn off long-time FM fans at first, it really is a fun story if you just shrug your shoulders and jump in.
Music is top notch, with a live orchestral recording by the man who composed Bioshock 1 & 2, Garry Schyman. In an interview, Mr. Schyman mentioned he wrote "Dylan's Theme" in a way that could be arranged for use in many situations, from sad and longing to heroic and furious. The soundtrack is indeed very focused and the main theme is used as an effective tool. Aside from the obnoxious Transformers-esque vocalizations, sound effects are brilliant. Guns are clanky and loud and it feels great. Voice acting is a mixed bag as expected, and I can safely say that Hydrogen Whiskey, the company that handled the voice work, messed up somewhere in administering the lines to the voice actors. The problem isn't so much that the voice actors are bad, per se, but the way they read certain lines, you can tell they likely read them out of order and without any context, because the cadence of their voice just doesn't make sense with what's going on. Hamilton is the worst offender by far - there is one instance where not only does he mispronounce a word (most likely from bad script editing rather than any fault of the actor), but this misspoken word changes the entire flow and meaning of the sentence it's in. When you have the subtitles on, this because apparent with his lines quite often and is rather sad, seeing as the actual subtitles make sense. On the other hand, the main character Dylan's voice acting is the best of the bunch and mostly well-done.
Graphically, the game uses distinct color pallets for the different acts of the game, which artistically gave it some flair. My favorite is definitely New York, which is given a very dusty, polluted, overcrowded grayish brown cast. I know that sounds awful, but it works with the setting, immersing the player into this sudden war breaking out in the city. On the PC, performance is very good, keeping a smooth 60 FPS most of the game. Textures on people's clothing could have used some work, but otherwise the game is very functional in its look, with lots of great details to those who pay attention, including some fantastic Front Mission series references on posters in New York, or little touches like "This is not a drill" scrolling by on infoboards when attacking a base. There is more to the graphics than one glance can uncover.
The meat of the game is the gameplay, and oh, how it sings. Gunplay is fun and fast with an arcadey flavor. Skating - an FM staple - is great, especially with the Agility backpack. It makes for stylish showdowns and some great chase scenes. Customization - another Front Mission hallmark - is here, with many of the mechs and weapons present since the original game being available once more. It's very fun to actually be in direct control of these iconic weapons and wanzers - what a change of pace. And while the scenario is solid, the gameplay itself shines even brighter in Multiplayer. While the included modes are rather basic, the 8 player matches are fun and require some real-time tactical thinking (hey, tactics are in the game after all!)
DRM-wise, like most Square-Enix titles, Steamworks is required. Though I hate the fact that Steam essentially means you can never sell off your game, it is otherwise one of the more humane DRM schemes being used (and honestly, I don't plan to sell the game anyway.) Certainly not the worst - hey, Ubisoft - Steam does have its ups and downs.
This game will likely get a lot of negative backlash from certain series fans, not to mention the usual internet hatred/ignorance of titles like this. But if you have a soft spot for mecha anime, a goofy but endearing plot, and a tight, solid gameplay offering, this is well worth a purchase.
I have had a lot of fun with it, and isn't that all some games need to be?

James Bond 007: Blood Stone Review

James Bond 007: Blood Stone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After just finishing the game I decided to write this review with the game still fresh in my mind. I decided to buy this game after constant temptings that came from the utter confusion of IGN's and other reviews that didn't seem to add up, which I will comment on later in the review.
First off, like many people said on Amazon...If you a 007 fan you'll love this game more than others, and Daniel Craig's presentation through the game will please fans of both the newer takes as well as those who were fond of Brosnan. There is no doubt about it that the game retains a more "classy" feel than maybe what you remember in some of the post-1990 movies, and this holds true since the game uses several rendering effects that bare tribute to the "film-quality" of pre-1990 takes.
Second, the game is almost perfectly fluid with the new CQC, vaulting(also featured in the new Goldeneye), and the Focus Aims that are practically "one-hit-kills" you earn from CQC takedowns. The game emphasizes stealth but not requires it unlike games like MGS where being spotted is almost insta-death. There is also a variety of weapons that range from silenced pistols to boom-bang grenade launchers, with the only frustration being the not-so-obvious-and-tedious "boss battles". That and you'll need a good gaming rig if you are aiming for the PC version(lag is scarce but its definitely there).
Third: The graphics are AMAZING, the art team did well in what seems to be "Mo-scanned" versions of the likes of Daniel Craig, Judi Dench, and others that the game has a very movie-like feel to it even in-game. I think it's a great competitor to the likes of Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, FFXIII, and Soul Caliber IV in terms of how much detail is being produced. As theatre buffs would call it, as long as you're not "doing bad" the game does seem(at least to me) to produce a "Suspension of Disbelief" at times and you just think it's your typical James Bond flick, but in video game form.
Fourth: While the game does end in a cliffhanger and the MP is not as "powerful" as Goldeneye...I'd say it's better if not as good when it comes to this due to it's amazing Single Player that Goldeneye seemed to lack at times.
In My Opinion?
9.0 out of 10

Killing Floor Review

Killing Floor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are two reasons some people have rated this game low.
1)It is compared to Left4Dead, which is unfair to both games
2)People are forgetting it's a budget game ($20.).
Now budget does not mean bad, it only means limited.
Lets look at its limits first:
-It only has six maps
-The animations are a bit rough
-Minimal supported story or characters
-The monster graphics are very good, but still not what you might see on a non budget game.
-The voice acting is so bad as to be laughable, and the repetition of some phrases will make you scream if the zombies don't.
-Only one end boss and although challenging, its pretty silly.
But all that matters is the game play and the game play on this game is fantastic! The game play is slower than L4D, but also more aggressive. The mood is different as you are not only supposed to survive but to exterminate every monster on every single level. It turns your initial "the hunted" into dominance as you go from overwhelming numbers of monsters, to hunting down the very last one.
Positives:
-Gun modeling, presentation and physics is outstanding. You have 12 weapons to choose from and they look and act like you would expect.
-Iron Sights ! In this game you actually look down the sights to fire, and this makes it thrilling. There are no crosshairs (which takes some getting used to), but you will feel much more engaged without having crosshairs float around unnaturally on the screen.
-The maps are OPEN, very open, and you can go anywhere to setup and prepare for the battles in the way you want.
-Team play is critical, but dynamic. The open nature of the maps makes team play different each and every game as you form up based on the perks of your team members and the nature of the monster swarm. And this kind of evolving team play is a blast!
-The community is into the game, but relaxed enough to support pickup games. Drop into a server at anytime and play with a squad, and after the boss battle move onto the next server. Sure there are hardcore clans, but you will be welcome on any open server.
-Perks: This is a fancy way to say leveling. There are multiple classes to choose from and each has five levels to work up to, giving you a higher set of skills.
-Level design: Outstanding as the default levels look and feel graphically like burned out and abandoned locations.
-Death animations: Although the monster movement is stiff, they sure die in spectacular ways. I NEVER tire of ironsight headshots, and the violent ways the monsters buy it.
-Mod Support: There are already several dozen user designed award winning levels, so the initial six level limit is negated the moment you login to the internet.
-ZEDtime slow motion
So this game may lack the polish you are used to with your $40-$60 dollar games, but it certainly doesn't lack at all in game play and team oriented monster killing thrills !

Alien vs Predator Review

Alien vs Predator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a long time fan of the Aliens and Predator franchises. When the 1999 AvP game was released, I thought I had found gold.
The 2010 version is, I'm quite sad to say, an utter disappointment to this long-time fan of the franchise.
I will point out the good things about this game first.
The environment is beautiful and perfect. Everything looks like it is supposed to look.
The story line is pretty good.
The sound is great. Everything sounds like it was sampled from the movies.
Cut scenes are great.
I LIKE that Marines can only carry 2 weapons plus a pistol. I also like that you have to hold a special key to run and the Marine can only run a certain distance before tiring and having wait before running again.
And.... well.... that's the only good things I can say about this game.
To be honest, I have only played about halfway through the Marine campaign. But so far, the gameplay is terrible. There is no crouch. Seriously. Hitting the "Jump" key seems like it causes the Marine to lift the equivalent of about 6 in off the floor. I realize his is armored and carrying a weapon but come on.
It seems the developers tried to get away from the "pickup health and armor" that is the norm for 1st person shooters. I give them credit for TRYING to think outside the box. The Marine has 1 bar for health. It is replenished by using stim-packs. There is no bar for Armor. I understand the devs wanting to do something different. Fine. But the Marines wear armor. There needs to be some way to repair it. As it is, the armor plays no role in your character. That is supposed to be one of the things that differentiates you from the Alien and the Predator.
The environment is entirely too dark. I realize that when you are a marine the environment is supposed to be dark and scary, but there is a difference between "dark and scary" and "I cant see a $^&@ thing!".
The environment is beautiful, but largely non-interactive. It actually reminds me of Doom 3.
In the first AvP game, and the AvP universe in general, Aliens are super fast, super strong, can climb anything, see in the dark and if they grab you, you are dead. Their weakness is that if the Marines see them before they can close the distance, they are turned into a pile of goo by a short burst from the Marines "Superior Firepower". Not in this game. The Aliens are slow and take about 4-5 bursts from a pulse rifle to kill.
So if the Aliens grab you, you are dead right? Wrong. Not in this crappy game. Marines can MELEE an Alien off if the Aliens grab them. "WTF" you say? You heard me. If an Alien grabs you and is about to put the jaws to your forehead, you can whack him with your gun and knock him off. When I discovered this, it made me wonder if the devs of this game had ever seen the movies or read any of the comic books. A MARINE CANNOT MELEE WITH AN ALIEN OR A PREDATOR! Come on, Arnold got his ass KICKED by a Predator, you think your average marine would fair better?
When I got the first AvP, Half-Life 2, FEAR, Left 4 Dead, or Deus Ex, I sacrificed sleep to play through them. I couldn't wait until I had everything done and had some time to indulge in some epic video game fantasy. I could care less if i play the 2010 version of AvP ever again. The gameplay just plain sucks. I may try skipping to the Predator campaign to see what kind of job they did with him but if the devs messed the Marines up this bad, I can only imagine how much they changed with the predator.
If the devs had half a brain, they would have taken the 1999 game and updated it with modern graphics, a modern engine (Source perhaps?), more missions, and more multi-player levels and released that. But noooooo! Im sure they had to "exercise their artistic license" and try to "create something unique. Our take on the series". In other words, the same mindset that caused Hollywood to release that steaming pile of poo "Aliens vs. Predator" in 2004. What they have ended up doing is messing up the formula that made the original game so great.
The thing that makes me the maddest is that I game on the PC. So i cant even take this piece of crap down to gamestop and trade it in for something else. Im simply out the [...]. I got screwed.

Medal of Honor 10th Anniversary Bundle Review

Medal of Honor 10th Anniversary Bundle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The good news if you decide to purchase the 10th Anniversary Medal of Honor Bundle:
You will have a fresh new copy of each game
Pacific Assault will be on 1 disk instead of 6.
The bad news if you decide to purchase the 10th Anniversary Medal of Honor Bundle:
None of the games are patched (downloading 2.5 GB of patches for just Airborne, and then the other games not very fun,)
May have issues trying to run Medal of Honor Series games on Newer PCs. (I had to use Nhancer to get them to run on my PC because of my video card)
May have a invalid CD Key error. (I cannot join any MP games in Pacific Assault due to the fact I have an invalid CD key, even though I have uninstalled fully to include in the registry and re-installed the game twice)
- EA's support site and e-mail all say you should have a response within 24 hours. Well after 40 hours I still had no response.
- EA's phone support was almost promising. After going through the automated responses I finally was getting to speak with a person I thought, until I heard this: "Please call back during normal business hours" So I tried again everyday this week at 9:00 am EST and 9:00 am Pacific Time. Wouldn't you know they have no business hours I guess...

Homefront Review

Homefront
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A little about my gaming experience, i've been playing PC FPS games since DOOM including Counter-Strike, all the PC Call of Duty games, all the PC Battlefield games, and so many more. I would consider myself a fair reviewer, I even found the 2010 Medal of Honor to have its redeeming qualities despite most others disliking it.
Prior to this games release I saw some promo material such as videos and the interactive website, which were masterfully done, to set the stage for what should have been a great game with an interesting story. Unfortunately, this was not the case.
First off, the graphics seem below par for the genre but are not horrible. The animation seems worse off though, as the way characters movement seem jerky in a way that is obnoxious and an eyesore.
Single-Player:
The game was noticeably short, clocking in at around 5 hours. The characters, environment, and story was surprisingly generic and the ending was an abrupt one that brought no closure. This was done on Normal difficulty by an experienced FPS player, so your mileage my vary. This was by no means an attempt at clearing it in a short time either, this included me dying at several places and reading several of the in-game history documents scattered around. While single-player campaign was surprisingly uninteresting given the great story they had to work with, it wasn't terrible. Even though the majority of it was bland it still had some fun moments.
Multi-Player:
This is the mode that I value the most in any FPS I buy as it is ultimately what I spend the most time playing. Homefront's take on multi-player has it's unique elements, such as aquiring Battle Points (BP) from doing actions such as killing an enemy or capturing an objective. This in-game currency and the only way to get power-ups such as RPGs, vehicles, remote-controlled attack drones, and such. One major issue with this system is that all items that destroy heavy vehicles are BP purchases. If you are stuck with low BP you can very easily be repeatedly killed or spawn camped by a helicopter with no way to destroy it.
The next major issue is sniping, in which the flaws of Homefront being console developed and ported to PC become very apparant. Players can start with a default sniper rifle which is semi-automatic with very little scope sway and recoil. In addition to this, it is a one shot kill to the body with no bullet drop. The combination of all these factors with the large maps makes it a sniping/camping nightmare. There is little skill needed to one shot kill someone from far away, as the sniper rifle has a high rate of fire with fairly low recoil.
There are many other smaller issues that I could go on about, but i'll try and shorten it into the all encompassing idea that Homefront just lacks polish. Everything seems rushed including balance issues and content. What could have been a great game got bogged down by poor implementation of ideas.
Bottom line:
Homefront does not stand up against any other quality FPS. Whether you are a fan of Call of Duty, Battlefield, Counterstrike, or any other FPS, you will probably find this game lacking in the aspect that makes that FPS series your favorite. Unless there is a major overhaul with future patches, I would not recommend this game to any FPS gamer.

Red Faction Guerrilla Review

Red Faction Guerrilla
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The game runs excellent on my pc (Q6600, 9800GT, 6Gb RAM, Vista x64), and I have not encountered any major bugs. Sometimes the destruction effects can be a bit awkward, like when a huge building is being held up by one little pillar, but that doesn't happen too often. I turned off AO because I really couldn't see a difference in image quality and it was making me lose a few fps. The 5.1 sound thing doesn't bother me because I play with crappy headphones, so it didn't hurt my personal evaluation of the game. However, I believe it IS a problem that needs to be adressed by the developers.
The graphics, while good on a technical level, aren't very inspired. I feel like they wasted the Martian setting. It looks like Arizona with futuristic cars. They could've had more outlandish landscapes.
Other than the somewhat mediocre presentation (mediocre in terms of art direction, not technical design), I love the game. The protagonist is a likeable guy, and the story missions so far have provided nice variety. The destruction is not just a gimmick. It's extremely satisfying and never gets old. While the missions usually focus on destroying a structure, there are just so many way to do it. Also, other than the limits placed by the environment, there really is no set path anywhere. One mission asked me to track a marauder through some buildings. Instead following the winding rooms and hallways, I just smashed a straight path through with the hammer.
Overall I think it's an excellent purchase for the price, and hopefully the sound issues get patched up for those of you who want to enjoy it in 5.1.

Just Cause 2 Review

Just Cause 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just Cause 2 is about the most fun that I have had with a PC game in a while. The graphics are absolutely amazing, view distance, dynamic environments. The look of this game is everything of Far Cry 2, with even more gasps of awesome.
You play the part of Rico Rodriguez, a CIA agent who is about the most physics breaking mass of testosterone I have ever seen. You are dropped into a large, open country to drop an evil dictator out of power by working with several different factions. To do this you have mass amounts of vehicles at your disposal, a multitude of guns and explosives and most importantly, a grappling hook and parachute.
This last part is the best part of the game. Using the hook, you can climb objects, access flying vehicles from the ground, pull people out of air and even tie object together. Tie someone to a barrel and blast the thing into space to see some real fun.
Initially, the game did not impress me. The story and mission parts of the game reminded me of Far Cry 2. Lots of repetition and little development. Then I hit a point where I slammed my car into another car and flew them both off a cliff. Seeing myself falling I decided to use my grappling hook to escape, but only managed to snare another bystander. In the end I opened a parachute and glided to safety all while watching one of the most insane wrecks ever. The game is full of stuff like this. Tie a motorcycle to a car and use it as a wrecking ball. Rope a plane and ride it around just because you can. So many times I found myself asking "Man wouldn't it be cool if I could to this?" Moments later, I did.
At this point I found that the point of the plot and game is actually secondary to the extreme sandbox fun in there. At points of my new found enjoyment, my wife actually thought I lost my mind due to the non-stop laughter and childlike joy radiating out of me. The fun factor of this game is higher than anything I can imagine playing lately. Honestly, this game is pure sandbox first, and an actual game third. Also, your destructive acts are rewarded with guns and vehicles. How many games honestly reward your childlike explosive needs?
As for the lack of XP support, well we saw this coming. Not many people cried that Halo didn't work on windows 3.1, so we really just need to move on here. DirectX 10 will simply not work on XP, and the look and feel of this game is something so amazing that you just need the best to make it happen.
If you are on the fence about getting yet another FPS in a time where they are roaming the earth, get off on this side now. This is not yet another modern day shooter remake, nor are you wandering yet another WW2 battlefield, this is something truly special.

Counter-Strike 1 Anthology Review

Counter-Strike 1 Anthology
Average Reviews:

It is nice to be able to play a game that has a voice capability in game instead of having to deal with Ventrilo or Teamspeak. Also one thing i want to mention is when you buy this game here is a list of games that come with it and their ratings. (They dont tell you about a couple of them)
Counter Strike 1.6 (5 Stars)
Counter Strike Condition Zero (4 1/2 Stars)
Counter Strike Condition Zero Deleted Scenes (4 1/2 Stars)
Day Of Defeat 1.6 (4 Stars)
Deathmatch Classic (5 Stars)
Ricochet (2 Stars)
Counter Strike is the game that started it all. It is enjoyable to play and the graphics are fairly decent. If you want the most killer graphics then i suggest you get the Counter Strike Source Package. Condition Zero is a separate game not an addition pack. The reason i gave it 4 1/2 stars is because I have a slight problem of when i let go of a direction button (to go forward, backward, sideways). When i let go it keeps going for less than a second. Day Of Defeat 1.6 Is fun but some of the servers lag a lot. Deathmatch Classic is a really funny game. This is really old and it is funny to watch all these people walk around with frozen fake faces. Ricochet is an odd game of jumping on these pads and knocking people of the pads to me its pointless. All these games use the Steam platform which can be tedious. DEFINATLY DO NOT!!!!! BUY THIS GAME USED.It will not work. Also when you choose to join the 2000+ servers on CS 1.6 sometimes there is a server that has all these dumb pointless sounds that you have to download to join the server. Overall a neat game, even though it is old there are still tons of people who play it!

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam - Expansion Review

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam - Expansion
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have Bad Company 2 on Steam. When I purchased the Vietnam expansion on Amazon, I simply entered the code in the Bad Company 2 main menu and Vietnam was activated without any problems. All of the content for Vietnam was apparently in the last huge patch for Bad Company 2. Vietnam is multiplayer only so those looking for a single player game have been warned. Overall, Vietnam has a different feel from BC2. The maps are huge and open, each of them are unique. There are five multiplayer maps total and all of them take place outdoors. The jungle experience and scenery is captured perfectly in this expansion. I found myself getting shot by Vietcong in rice paddies and facing intense close combat fights on jungle paths. The downside to the openness of the maps is that you will have to deal with a lot of snipers, more so than in BC2.
There are about four unique weapons for each class and the perks attained in BC2 (magnum ammo, extended mags, vehicle upgrades) are available to use. Shooting and aiming with the weapons is more difficult with just iron sights as scopes have been removed (except for sniper rifles) as well as UAVs and other high-tech equipment. It seems like the weapons do more damage also. Its pretty intense when you are facing RPK machine guns and "thumper" grenade launchers in the jungle with a beat-up M-16. This game just feels gritty and realistic.
I'm enjoying this expansion, its much more challenging and realistic than BC2 and requires a fair amount of skill and teamwork. I definitely recommend it if you liked Bad Company 2.
