Bachmann Iron King HO Scale Electric Train 155 Pcs Set Review

Bachmann Iron King HO Scale Electric Train 155 Pcs Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my first train set. I mainly bought it to put under our Christmas tree.
I am very impressed with the workmanship of this set as far as the locomotive and cars go. The locomotive is pretty heavy and because of that it feels sturdy. I wouldn't dare dropping it on the floor though; I doubt it would survive impact intact. The cars feel a little delicate, however the amount of detail in the painting and molding is impressive. The wheels did come off when unpacking, but they were really easy to pop back into the truck frame.
The Plasticville pieces do feel a little on the flimsy side; then again they are provided just to fill up an scenery around the train and they are not really the main center of attention. Plasticville has lots of small pieces, so watch out with smaller kids.

Bachmann Trains Overland Limited Ready - To - Run Ho Scale Train Set Review

Bachmann Trains Overland Limited Ready - To - Run Ho Scale Train Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Bachmann HO Overland Limited Train Set is an absolutely beautiful train set if all you want to do is look at it. If you want to operate the Overland Limited Set or play with it, BUY SOMETHING ELSE: The wheels fall off and will not stay on as the train navigates the snap-fit tracks built for it. The Train does not get around the entire loop of tracks without losing nearly all its wheels on the main car as well as the accompanying nine cars. Flipping the switch on the terminal rerailer amounts to a derailment because the wheels can't handle turns. The worst part is the merchants selling this product know this and will not accept returns or issue refunds or exchanges once the item has been opened. It is a very expensive Train Set which is frustrating especially when I think about the fact that I purchased it as my kid's first really expensive toy for $198.60 and my kid didn't play with it for more than five minutes before the wheels fell off. Mind you, this is just while he is watching the train navigate the snap-fit tracks.

Continental Express 0n30 Scale Steam Christmas Passenger Train Set

Should have known better. Other trains of this variety cost 2 or 3 times as much for a reason. They were worth it. My advice, spend more for a better train set. It tells you something when trim pieces break off while you are unwrapping it. The motor gears were mis-alinged. It wasn't a cheap train set. It was expensive junk.

Bachmann Trains Steam Digital Commander Ready-to-Run DCC-Equipped HO Train Set Review

Bachmann Trains Steam Digital Commander Ready-to-Run DCC-Equipped HO Train Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the set for my 5 year old boy. He is having a ton of fun with it for the last few days. A word of caution. HO models are fragile. Period. If you have a boy in crashing/smashing phase, this is not the right toy to buy -- wait till he is a bit older (recommended minimum age is 8 years -- it's printed right there on the box). You'd definitely want to play with and supervise your youngster while playing with this train set at least at first. If you are giving this set to a very young boy (or girl), explain first that this type of toy is fragile and that some amount of patience and care will be needed while playing with it.
At first, I was worried about the price. Then realized that this set isn't that expensive after all, compared with what else is out there. Or compared with Thomas wooden railroad (few pieces of plain solid painted wood on wheels for $$$). Considering that HO scale locomotives I saw in few local shops are running around $60-80 for cheap ones, and up to few hundred for more fancy stuff, this set is actually rather good deal (MSRP is $260, Amazon sells it for around $150). Bachmann has two more sets that come with all you need for DCC operation (both DCC controller and DCC locomotive in the set) that cost about the same with diesel engines. However, my son wanted steam engine, so that's the one we got. Bachmann makes few more other sets that include DCC equipped locomotives, but not DCC controller.
The packaging could have been a bit better. I'd recommend an adult taking the locomotive and cars out of the packaging. Just don't force anything and you'll be all right. I've got the cars out relatively easy, however the locomotive needed a bit of work till it finally came out. The locomotive and the cars are running smooth for their price range. Depending on the age of your kid, she or he might need a bit of help putting the train on the track (it's an HO scale after all, requiring a bit of precision that very young hands might not yet have).
You should definitely read at least the manual for DCC controller. It would be nice if Quick Start guide was included. I can easily see people connecting everything, not reading the manual and not being able to figure out how to start locomotive. In short, locomotive is pre-programmed at position 3. So, after you connect everything, hit number 3 to select position 3, turn the knob and off you go. To turn on the light on the locomotive, press function key to go into the function mode (while position 3 is still selected) then button 10. While still in function mode, you can press button 1 to dim or un-dim the light. To exit function mode, press function button once more. Use stop button to suspend all activity on the railroad, and press second time to resume.
The system comes with DCC locomotive and very simple and very basic DCC controller. Oh joy. I wish those existed when I was a kid! The turnout is manually operated. It would be nice if set included DCC controlled turnout, for complete experience. A magnet that can be placed under the track for uncoupling action is included in the set too. However, don't expect young kids to master it. It could be just the couplers that are included with the set, but I also have problem uncoupling cars using the under-track magnet from time to time. The E-Z Mate couplers are easy to couple on straight track, they simply snap together. They might need a bit of help connecting on curved track.
The 0-6-0 locomotive included in the set is silver colored Union Pacific. Checking Bachmann web site, they also have the same 0-6-0 locomotive with Great Northern color scheme which I liked a bit more, but not as part of a set. The only real complaint about the locomotive is that the front coupler is not E-Z Mate and doesn't seem to be compatible with the E-Z Mate couplers on the cars. Actually, it looks like it was more of decoration then functioning coupler. The rear coupler (which is located on the tender) is the same E-Z Mate as the ones on the cars, and connects nicely. The connection between locomotive and tender doesn't use coupler (it's a simple pin system). The light on the locomotive can be turned on and off and brightness adjusted to full or half remotely from the controller.
The wheels on the cars use relatively simple mounting. The instructions say they may come out in case of rough handling (or during the transport). However, they are easy to snap back on. If you have a car that seems to be de-railing all the time, making too much noise, or simply doesn't seem to be going smoothly, check if all the wheels are properly seated (and re-seat them if needed).
The E-Z track system is simply standard HO tracks with standard connectors (exactly the same as those I had 30 years ago), simply glued to plastic roadbed. The plastic guides on the roadbed make it a bit easier to line up connectors, and the whole thing is a bit simpler to assemble on carpet then the plain tracks without roadbed. Few of the (metal) connectors needed to be worked-in a bit the first time we were connecting the tracks. On the plus side, tracks with roadbed definitely do look much much nicer. On the minus side, these are specific to Bachmann, so you are kind of locking yourself in. You can buy miles of plain tracks (without roadbed) dirt cheap on local train shows. They should be no trouble connecting to these tracks, however it may be a bit flimsy to connect them (due to different elevation and having to go over plastic connector).
Looking at [...] website, they have DCC operated E-Z track turnouts and switches, but only as separate items, not as part of an expansion set. It would be nice if they were to start selling DCC version of their standard expansion set.

This product is obviously made by the same company that was producing the Bachmann line of 0n30 trains for hobbyists and christmas villages. It is not designed young kids, but is a fine model for the adult model railroader. I have owned several items of the Bachmann line of 0n30, and this engine stands right along side them in detail and operation. An affordable option in 0n30.

I have no quarrel with the shipper. The product arrived in time and safe and sound. The engine itself is not up to par with other engines I have on my HO scale layout (it skips over turnouts and will not go real slow -- I think it is too lightwieght) but my grandson loves it anyway and I guess that's what counts.

I got this from Amazon over a year ago and it definitely looks like a Thomas from a day in snow. Now, I ran him a couple of times and he is a decent runner. The only detail I saw was that he was slightly tilted, which wasn't something I'd expect from Bachmann. However, it didn't bother me too much as he still ran well with the truck that had snow flakes on it, a tanker with a wreath on it, and Emily's coach with Christmas decorations. Overall, this is a very nice product you can add to your Christmas tree when the holidays arrive.

This train is not well made. It ran fine until we put the oil in and then it was all choppy like the oil was shorting something out under the hood. After a few months the wheels on one side got out of whack - the push rod went up when it should have been down. Could manually fix it but after several times the plastic fake piston on the front broke off too. It could be glued - but you get the picture.

In the era of high speed, discover this miniature train, which gives the third dimension to the images of ancient prints that have always fascinated me for the enthusiasm emanating thinking of the first passengers who suddenly met the future, is how to make a jump in the past. Compared with the trains today, looks like a toy, but his whole look is a masterpiece of simplicity to the early days of steam traction. The box, then, reminiscent of those that once contained a wonderful toy for a few lucky owners. The painted figure on the lid already introduced to the magical world of the railroad (and the coal soot that was deposited on the faces and clothes, was the real cosmetic amalgamating the passenger with the train).

Bachmann Trains Digital Commander Ready - To - Run DCc - Equipped Ho Train Set Review

Bachmann Trains Digital Commander Ready - To - Run DCc - Equipped Ho Train Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bachmann has always had a name for making products, that were better quality then the competition as well as, bringing products, like high quality locomotives, that were out of the price rage of the masses to the masses! they have also been know for innovation, like their patented track plug that makes wiring the transformer to the track, very easy and very safe! This particular set is no exception to those rules!
This particular set features Bachmanns EZ command DCC system. DCC is a system that allows two trains to operate completely independently form each other on the same track. This is to say, you can have, one train and one running revers on the same track with out having to worry about blocks or separately powered sections of tracks. Basically! the model trains can now completely duplicate the behaver of the real things!
The EZ command system is a complete self contained unit! there are no other parts to buy! the device features 10 addresses to program locomotives to respond to. Switching between locomotive is easy! just press the button that corresponds to the locomotive you want to control, and you have control of it!
Programing the locomotives is so easy, a child could quite literally do it! just push a few buttons and you are done! If only all things were this easy to understand. You can even easily program two locomotives to run together as a pare! For those of you out there that already have and lament letting go of a none dcc locomotive, Bachmann has you covered! Button 10 can be used to operate such a locomotive. I prefer to hook up one of Bachman's more modern power packs, see the instructions for the proper model, to the EZ command system. This frees up button ten to control anther DCC locomotive and lets you control the analog with the power pack, independently of the dcc locomotives!
The set uses Bachmanns standard setting, but now somewhat dated EZ track. While it looks special at first glance, all it really is however, is standard Ho track that has been attached to interlocking peaces of plastic. This meas those infamous rail joints or connectors, little peaces of mettle that transfer the power from track to track, are retained. the track does its job, in terms of making sure that what ever is in the carpet or on the floor, dose not get into you locomotives motor! However, the connectors have to be adjusted every once and a while, to maintain good power contact! The track features a simple wire that quite literally plugs into the EZ command system! No worry's about shorts caused by crossed wires here!
The freight cars the set includes are well built and roll very smoothly! You can actually back them around a curve with out them derailing! They are all equipped with mettle wheels and Bachmann's spring loaded mark 2 couplers! these, unlike Bachmann's previous attempts, these will easily get around the track with out disconnecting! If you want to disengaged them, and do some switching on the included siding, just install and use Bachman's uncoupling device!
The 2 locomotives, An EMD FT and EMD GP, resemble some of Bachmans offering of long past! But that however, is were the similarity's end! The locomotives are all wheel drive and, of course, DCC equipped! they run pretty smooth although, there are better locomotives out there, these more then do the job!
The price of this item may case some parents, that had model trains as kids to faint. But we have to remember, that $100 may have bought you a top of the line set, 20 or 30 years ago, we have seen some inflation since then! We also must consider the quality of this product and what it is capable of and it includes for that price! add in the educational value and the fact that a video game system will cost more if not twice as much and teach you nothing, and this set looks like the real bargain it is! It puts a well equipped dcc starter set in your kids or your hands for a fraction of the price!
Buy this set for you kid(s) and spend the money saved on games, on some more track and or accessory's you have the perfect Christmas gift!

Bachmann Trains Thomas Fun with Freight Set Ready - To - Run Ho Scale Train Set Review

Bachmann Trains Thomas Fun with Freight Set Ready - To - Run Ho Scale Train Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It broke the first day!
I bought this for my 5yr old son for Christmas last year. It looked great, he got it opened and we got it put together easy, and it ran fine. Although even at 100% power it sort of runs slow. It doesn't even run at all at less than 40% power. He had been playing with it all day (about 6 hours) when it stopped working. I opened it up and could smell the burnt plastic. I figured out that there is a complete design flaw in this train. Its motor is housed in plastic that shrinks when it gets hot. When the train has been running the motor heats up and the plastic melts off and the motor comes away from its gears. I believe that the Bachmann Co. knows this and they lowered the power that the motor can use to solve the heat problem, that's why it doesn't do anything until about 50% power. Also the wheels are just barely on there and its overall cheep junk.
Bachmann has a 1year and life time warranty. So I sent it to them and we got it back 3 months later. My son was really upset. We got the train back and I put it away.
Now its Christmas 2010 and we had just set up the tree this year and got out the Thomas HO scale train and my son had it running around the tree.
This time it took 2 days but IT MELTED AGAIN!!!. And this time I was trying not to let it get hot! I was trying to have him give the train a break and cool down. And now I started to read any other reviews on other Bachmann trains and I found out that I am not alone.
I'm going to send it back in to get repaired (it will cost $15 this time. And when it comes back Christmas will be over, so since we have all of this track (I bought extra) I am going to get my boy another train set. But I don't know what to get.
I will never buy Bachmann again, and I also have read that Athearn has terrible problems with trains wheels falling off and that they are junk too!
I hope that you read this and consider that if you buy Bachmann, then your wasting your money!
I suggest to either go with Life-Like trains because they are cheap, but they do have jerky movements, and are too light and derail often, but the motor doesn't melt when you use it! And they are mostly durable. Or go with Atlas Trains.
I think that I am going to buy a set from Atlas, but there is no selection!
I wish that these corporations would listen to their customers and build quality products instead of just trying to rip people off!
