O-27 The Scout Freight Set Review

(More customer reviews)I own 8 Lionel trains dating from 1946 to present -- this "Scout" is one of the weaker links in an otherwise great line of trains. I bought it for my grandson as his first O gauge -- it may be his last Lionel.
I'm not sure who is in charge at Lionel (try and find out who really owns them or where they are located), but they need to improve their engineering and quality control. The 3 of the 4 most recent purchases have not been up to the quality of Williams or MTH. From now on I'll buy other brands of O gauge engines or sets first.
Oh, by the way, Lionel never finished the sequel to their DVD film, "Lionelville Destination: Adventure" -- it leaves you hangin' with no resolution to the story (apologies to my grandkids).

(More customer reviews)This is part of Bachmann's high quality line of 1/4" to the foot ('O' Scale) models. These represent 30" narrow gauge trains that operated around the late 1800's through the mid 1900's. These models run on HO gauge track, though the tie spacing is aesthetically incorrect for this scale; proper O scale 30" gauge track is available.
This really represents the pinnacle of mass produced locomotives. The majority of this model is high quality die-cast metal, and most of the detail parts are metal as well. Solder joints are clean and professionally done, and the paint job is fantastic. The drive-train functions in a completely prototypical manner, with variable length universal joints transferring rotation to the wheels via bevel gears. Watching this model run is simply fascinating! The gearing is very low, so this engine is amazingly smooth at slow speeds. Considering that real shay locomotives rarely broke 20 mph, this is just fine. There is space in the fuel bunker for a DCC decoder, and even a speaker for a sound equipped decoder. There are several after market 'dress up kits' out there for this model, but even if you leave it as is, it is a beautiful little machine.
The quality of this piece easily rivals $1000+ hand made brass imports from a few years ago; you simply will not find anything to be the least bit disappointed about with this loco. The actual length of this model is about 7".
Note that this is a finescale model, and is appropriately fragile. Children would certainly enjoy this, but it is meant to be enjoyed with the eyes, and only gently cared for with the hands! Unless you are pretty interested in scale model railroading, I'm not sure why you would even consider buying this...

Lionel Thunder Valley Quarry Mine O-Gauge Train Set Review

(More customer reviews)We bought just the dockside locomotive (available as Lionel 6-30124-e), not the whole Thunder Valley set. This is one cool little steam locomotive, and it works exceptionally well! The fact that it doesn't have a separate coal tender makes very nimble, and with front and rear operating couplers, it can pull or push in either direction. It's a great looking little steam engine that has lots of great details...brass bell, brass whistle, lighted cabin with engineer & fireman figures, operating smoke stack, operating horn, forward/neutral/reverse, front and rear directional lights, and metal hand rail. It's loaded for such an inexpensive engine. It's also solidly built with die cast metal body, and is powerful enough to pull the loads of a full size locomotive. This is a very capable, very neat little dockside steamer that has a great sounding horn, and is a lot of fun. It's a great way to get started or expand an existing setup with. Highly recommended!

(More customer reviews)We bought this to add to an existing Lionel set. It has enough power to pull at least five or six cars. It goes forward and in reverse and the whistle sounds. The engine is stable and it is hard to derail it. We ran it at full speed on a O-36 Fastrack loop and it stayed on the track. The details look nice. The eyes go back and forth and you can change the faces, but we never do so. For the money it is a nice engine.

(More customer reviews)Marklin is to trains what the swiss are to watches. You pay a lot but they aren't for kids and they can be passed on for generations like a fine watch. The detail and craftsmanship for these Z scale trains is crazy with each car being like an inch long however because they are so small the parts are tiny and can be broken easily so no kids allowed within 10 feet of these. I own a few other marklins and longest one I've owned is 30 years now and still runs like a champ! It still cost me over a hundred dollars for a beginner set way back then.

Most of the starter kit price goes into a high quality engine, cars, connectors and transformer. No additional scenery or additional track. These would need to be additional purchases. If you are planning to keep this for a number of years and is not a "throw away" toy, then this is a good choice. My two (almost three) and four year old love the set. We purchased the upgraded version with the bell and whistle so make sure you get the set with the train sounds.
