Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter Review

I purchased this on Steam when they had a pre-order special on it. I haven't had a single issue getting it to work nor have I experienced any of the so-called bugs that people have been complainig about. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate and using all the latest drivers from the Nvidia website for my motherboard and video cards.
My machine specs:
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit
Intel Q6600 Quad Core CPU
Dual XFX 8800GT 640M 512MB in Sli
XFX nForce® 680i LT (MB-N680-ILT9) Motherboard
OCZ DDR2 PC2-6400 / 800MHz / NVIDIA® SLI-Ready Edition / 4GB (2x2048) Kit
Dual 250gb Western Digital HDD in Raid 0
It's a remake of the original game with updated graphics. That's pretty much it. There's nothing new here except for the visuals. If anything, there are reduced features from the original game. For instance, Croteam removed the ability to save your game in multiplayer mode which is the stupidest thing they ever did. That's truly my biggest complaint about the game really.
If you already have the original there's really no need to get this one. The original still works perfectly fine for me on Windows 7 and the graphics on the original look fantastic as well IMO. Don't get me wrong the HD version looks way better but aside from the graphics there's just not enough here to justify purchasing the game again.
Steam is an awesome gaming service. The best out there. Don't be afraid to use their service because of one persons bad review. Everyone that I have introduced Steam to loves it. I especially like it because you no longer require a CD to run a game. Just some food for thought.

Empire Total War: Special Forces Edition Review

Empire Total War: Special Forces Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Gameplay Positives:
============
- Good graphics
- Interesting scenarios
- Improved Campaign and Battle AI (over MTW2)
- Field battles are fun and on occasion the AI does some clever things.
- detailed sea battles
- Suicidal general problem seems to have been improved (over MTW2)
Gameplay Negatives:
===================
- Siege battles are horrible and almost impossible to lose. This in itself makes the game a cinch to win.
- The AI artillery frequently fires into the backs of its own troops.
- AI artillery inside settlements demolish their own walls.
- More issues but somewhat minor in overall nature.
*BUGS*
======
- Major memory leak being reported that causes your game to eventually crash reported. You will need an occassional reboot of your system if your performance starts to decline on your system.
- performance issues even with high end PC's due to some choppiness with the animation textures. Turns are very slow.
- ATI Graphic card owners need to be aware of some graphics issues.
- MAJOR activation and install problems!! It took me over 4 hours to get the game installed/running without crashing. This only after I read lengthy posts at the company web sites. The sheer number of bugs being reported at their site is staggering.

Conclusion:
============
For this game to be released in this condition is disgraceful. It is evident that the game was rushed out with little or no testing. This game is in need of an immediate patch before it is playable.
Is it worth buying? Yes and no. All Total War games are worth buying. In its current state I can't in good faith recommend buying it right now so waiting for the patches to be released is your best bet.

GUNMAN CHRONICLES Review

GUNMAN CHRONICLES
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The clans are still playing it, but because the old WON servers are now defunct, you will need a Steam account to play multiplayer online. If you have a Halflife game, then you probably already have the Steam account. Once you install Gunman nornally, to play multiplayer online all you have to do is this:
Open up your Programs folder where Gunman is installed (probably C:/Sierra/Gunman), and look for the folder called "Rewolf." Then just copy that folder to your Steam programs folder where all your other Steam games are listed. For example, my address to the Steam folder looks like this:
C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\jokerfunny
"jokerfunny" is my account name in Steam. Also, something no one told me, is that for me I had to open Steam and click on Games in the Menu and then select Activate Product on Steam. Then I had to enter my Gunman cd code. Once I did that and restarted Steam, Gunman showed up immediately. It did not show up just because I copied the Rewolf folder to the address above, but others swear it will so it might for you.
You need to make sure you have your regular Halflife game installed and showing in Steam before you do any of the above.
It sounds like alot, but it took me less than 4 minutes, and now I can play this great game with one of the original first person shooter communities ever! Yes, Gunman was out there right with Duke Nukem, but Gunman was way ahead of its time. Deathmatch maps are still everywhere on the internet and the clans are still designing new ones. Believe it or not!!

Myst Trilogy (Myst Masterpiece, Riven, Myst III - Exile) Review

Myst Trilogy (Myst Masterpiece, Riven, Myst III - Exile)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Like a complete nincompoop, I bought this thing without visiting UBI Soft's website first. DO NOT try to run Myst Masterpiece Edition on a Windows XP machine. It will make things very unstable. At least, it did for me. Fortunately, I was able to reboot using the last known good configuration, then uninstalled the miscreant software and performed a System Restore. My machine appears to be fine now.
A visit to the FAQ page on UBI Soft's support site informed me that they do not support Windows 2000 or XP for their "classic" games, nor do they have plans to do so. So why are they selling a brand new boxed set of the most popular game trilogy in the history of the world without a warning? When they say "For Windows 95 or 98", they mean ONLY Windows 95 or 98. They didn't even mention Millennium Edition, that I could see!
Practically all new computers sold in the past six months have come with Windows XP, so I'm guessing there are going to be lots of very unhappy campers, if my experience is any guide.
Need I say more?

Rail Simulator Review

Rail Simulator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The other review on here was written by someone who isn't a big fan of simulators, so here's one from someone who is. I bought this game after seeing that Train Simulator 2 will be coming out next year, and in all honesty, I'm tired of waiting. I had been following this game months before it came out, and was surprised to see that they had already released it a few days ago. I have played it for a few days now, and here are its aspects:
Graphics: Now, the graphics of this game are much better than they are in MSTS. In all honesty, they should be; MSTS was released seven years ago when video cards weren't that powerful. Of course today, we have nice Nvidia 8800's and ATI 2900's (and so on). However, the graphics aren't as good as they could be. In fact, I hate to say it, but some of the photograps of renders in the game look better than they actually do in-game. Also, the resolution cannot be changed in the in-game menu itself; this must be done before you begin playing. But, surprisingly, this game supports HD resolutions, so maybe that's why the photos look good. I am using a monitor that only goes up to 1280x1024, so I couldn't tell you how that looks. I also do not like the fact that there are no anti-aliasing controls. I'm using an Nvidia 8800GT to power this game, and I want these games to take advantage of the hardware I own. But, in the end, the graphics are good; I have seen much worse. I do like the fact that people can be seen and that there is an engineer in the cab.
Sound: The sound in this game is again an improvement over MSTS. The natural sound effects are much more realistic (IE; the birds chirping, cars going by, etc.), but I don't understand why you can still hear these sounds clearly even when your train is going at a high speed. When was the last time you heard a bird whistling while your car was going 65? Exactly. Lol, but the locomotive sounds are nice, but I didn't like the fact that the two North American locomotive's horns were both the same; I like variety when it comes to the horns and whistles. The British horns on the diesels make me laugh; they sound like the horns those really old cars used to have (In my opinion, North American diesels have the nicest, prettiest sounding horns around)
Gameplay: The controls for this game are very similar to those of MSTS, so making a transition to this game should you buy it won't be hard. The only thing I had to get used to was the fact that the A key increased the throttle and the D key decreases it (vice-versa to the layout of MSTS; It was funny when I first played this game as I kept trying to slow down my train, only to realize I was speeding it up!) The display Menu's and HUD's are much more helpful, although it doesn't show you the speed limit of the tracks ahead (at least I don't think it does). The scenarios are nice, but I didn't think there were enough of them.
Game Options: This is the part that aggravates me: In MSTS, you could choose the locomotive you wanted for a route, and play from there. There was also a seperate place to make your own consists. In this game, you have to do all of this in a scenario editor, something I don't yet understand. I may be good with computers, but I'm not this good. I have downloaded content for it, but I haven't been able to use most of it. I'll have to learn more about this process.
Overall: I am glad I bought this game. I am enjoying it, but all the while I feel as though there could have been more potential to it. Perhaps the company will release patches for it that fiz up minor areas and add more options. They already give away official content for it for free (you just have to make an account with the site, which is also free) I will continue to play this game until MSTS 2 comes out, which will probably be one of the best Train-Sims out there. It will be using DirectX10, so it will definitely be using my hardware to is potential. Lol, by the time this game is out, Nvidia will most likely have there 9000 series out, so this card won't be one of the greatest anymore. Oh well. Overall, I give this game three stars. I hope this review has helped some of you.

Trainz Simulator 2010: Engineers Edition Review

Trainz Simulator 2010: Engineers Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased Trainz 2010 in August. I have enjoyed the game very much, but I'll leave it to someone else to review the actual game. My purpose for this review is to warn purchasers that this is not the N3V/Auran version of the game as suggested by Amazon above. It is actually third-party software distributed by "Steam/Valve". This is significant, because I have learned that it is not possible to update this version of the game with the latest patches put out by the original game developer (Auran).
The version I downloaded from Amazon was Build #43361. Auran has recently issued patches to update the game to Build 43434 and now Build 44088, to address various problems and bugs that have been identified within the game. Build 43361 was left out of these update patches, and I have learned from the Trainz community that Auran and Steam don't seem to cooperate together when it comes to authorizing updates, so this version of the game may never be able to be updated beyond it's current build.
Although I enjoy the game, I'm disappointed that I will miss out on future improvements and fixes made to the game. Therefore, I recommend purchasing the game directly from Auran instead.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat Review

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat is one of those games that you either get into it, or you don't but don't ever hate.
The STALKER series does have a plot and the plot is well grounded, however STALKER is really about exploration and "living" in the zone rather than speed running through the game.
And the developers made it very easy to get drawn into the world of STALKER, everything from the wind blowing in your face to gun shots far out in the wilderness all creates this world that YOU ARE ALONE and only you can keep yourself alive, eating regularly and scavenging for ammo, weapons, food and medical supplies after witnessing a dynmaic faction war going down in the distance.
The great thing about STALKER is that you are not the only one living there, other NPCS create groups, form friendships and make camp during the night, only to be ambushed by bandits before DAWN, this actually happens, it is not scripted, it's all dynamic! However, there's only so much the devs can do to pull you into the world of STALKER, and it shows, the graphics are looking quite dated on average, though there are times the scenery looks almost photorealistic.Call of Pripyat makes a GREAT expansion to the first STALKER game.
NOTE: YOU NEED THE FIRST IN ORDER TO PLAY CALL OF PRIPYAT

Sid Meier's Civilization V Review

Sid Meier's Civilization V
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The working relationship between a game designer and his publisher is never a simple one. So I would not know where exactly to place the blame, Sid Meyer or 2K GAMES. But in the end, it does not matter. Because it is simply sad to see a great gaming franchise came to this.
THIS IS NOT A CIVILIZATION GAME
A great number of major features of this beloved series have been simply removed. A fellow gamer called this "Civilization For Dummies" and he is absolutely right.
There is no trading maps or technologies. There is no claiming resources outside your borders by building a colony. There is no need for transport ships as units apparently are now all..amphibious (and they need 15-20 turns to cross an ocean!). There are no city-growth milestone requirements (granary, aqueduct, refrigeration). There is no culturally conquering an enemy city (detonating a "culture bomb" by consuming a Great Artist will only get you extra territory tiles but no cities). There are no spies nor health/pollution balance. And there are no armies (please read on).
ARMY CASTRATION
Someone please tell me what was so wrong with armies that had to be yanked out? Napoleon almost conquered Europe with one army. Germany almost conquered the eastern hemisphere with three and the US still holds a two-and-a-half armies doctrine. How can a turn-based game be called Civilization unless one can emulate, well, a real civilization? Building an army, seasoning it on minor conflicts and then going for the enemy's capital was one of the most fun parts of any Civilization game. Why Sid, why?
YOU MAY BE ABLE TO LAUNCH INTO SPACE YET CANNOT CLIMB MOUNTAINS?!
Movement should be hindered by rough terrain. Units that have 3 or 4 moves on the plains should not be expected to do more than 1 or 2 on a mountain, right? Well, no. Mountains seem to be those magical places no unit can climb or pass through (not even ...helicopters of jet fighters!). And I cannot see how this makes for more complicated strategic decisions than timing your movements, claiming the high ground and having a bonus for elevated artillery?
UNIT STAMPEDE
A major issue for me, this was what really ruined the game. For some unfathomable reason units cannot be stacked. A worker can coexist with a military unit but that's it. Artillery and shock-cavalry are very vulnerable to attacks and (with the new hexagon layout) one would need ...six defensive units to protect a single artillery battery.
As a result, units keep getting on each other's way (especially when ordered to move for distances that require more than a turn), they refuse to even pass through friendly units (!) and the "tactical" considerations that result from this are trivial. And whenever besieging an enemy city, one has to endlessly maneuver his units around it (while exposed to its bombardment) whereas wounded units are never easy to withdraw.
You cannot even garrison more than a single unit within a city. Not that it would make a difference, since the garrisoned unit is not automatically awaken to fight back when the city is under attack(!), the city is left to defend itself.
CAN YOU REALLY COMMAND WITHOUT A...CENTRAL COMMAND?
The economy is nose-diving into the red and you want to reduce the percentage going into research for a while to avoid having units of yours deleted one by one? The fickle people of your civilization are unhappy and you want to placate them by increasing their entertainment allocation? You have discovered conscription and you want to upgrade all your musketeers into recruits? Well, TOUGH LUCK! There is not central command screen to do so. Only advisers that you have to thank for annoying you.
You have zero control of both your cities resource distribution and your national economy. And units have to be hunted down and upgraded one by one.
Speaking of the economy, when are going to see a Civilization game where one can run and manage a national debt?
NO FREE EYE-CANDY IN THIS UNIVERSE. NOT EVEN A STALE ONE.
The game does look new and polished and the units are well designed but not cutting edge and not without a steep hardware price. If you expect anything comparable to STARCRAFT II crispiness you will be disappointed - at my 1280x1024 resolution it is not easy to discern roads from railroads.
The system I am running my copy was top of the line about a year ago and still I had to tweak the video settings with a mix of high and medium to get it running. Even then, whenever I scroll to a different location of the map, I can see the image fleshing out, just like zooming in a Google-Earth map.
So one can only wonder: why should one need a...Cray to run a Civilization game at full?
STEAM OF WAR
The game requires OnLine Activation (and rumored perpetual reactivation every few days) and has to be tied to a STEAM account. Effectively this means that the game is a piece of rentware the buyer never really owns and yet it is sold at full price. I realize that to some people this may not be a serious issue so, in case you are wondering, I deducted a single star from my overall rating of the game because of its DRM scheme. To every other gamer however, you can now make an informed decision. This was a major disappointment. I never though I'd say this but I while playing the latest Civilization game I caught myself wondering if they would ever make...CALL TO POWER III.
New gamers, steer clear of this mess, this is NOT what a Civilization game plays like.
Seasoned gamers, we know better than to call this a Civilization game.
Sorry Sid, EPIC FAIL.

Ultimate Trainz Collection Review

Ultimate Trainz Collection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Trainz is a railway simulator that owes much to the internet. I've only had the product for a short time and it's a very rich product so the review will not cover everything in detail.
Trainz has many faces and features. I get the impression the product has evolved over time. Out of the box it has scenarios much the same as Microsoft Train Simulator. However it also has a model railway heritage and as such you can use a model railway type controller to control the train rather than learn the precise cab controls that Microsoft makes you use, dual cab control. This mode has point scoring speed limits etc. a conventional game.
It shows it's Australian heritage by including a number of Australian routes, engines and rolling stock. In one scenario you take over a train part way through it's route. The driver handing over very definitely has an Australian accent.
Besides the scenarios it also let's you use virtual model railway layouts. There are a number of layouts included with the product. This mode is known as Driver. You can select the engine and the rolling stock you want to use. You can build the layouts with the surveyor tool.
The simulator is very open and flexible and that's it's great advantage. Railway track can be selected with wooden or concrete sleepers etc. Objects can run on tracks, either visible or not. Objects can have sound files attached. Objects can be imported or exported. The product comes with a copy of Gmax to let you build and add objects. What does this mean? Well if you want to run a different engine or rolling stock than those supplied you can either build your own or download one someone else has built. Want to repaint it? The product comes with Paint Shed included. Want animals to populate your fields? Simply download them and add them to your layout, with sound of course. There are a number of houses, churches, skyscrapers etc. available, some English, some European, some North American to populate your layout.

These objects can be items such as ships, boats, trams, buses, cars etc. Theoretically if you don't like trains you can build a layout with just buses and cars. I'm hoping someone builds a layout with canals and I can run a narrow boat or two. Currently there doesn't seem to be a lot of steam locomotives but there does seem to be a number of web sites that are either single or group enthusiasts who are building some very specific and detailed models.
In many ways the Internet communities that exist remind one of the model railway societies that exist. With different people getting involved in building models. The difference is these models can be shared electronically.
Finally a comment on hardware. Trainz pushes Directx to the limit. You'll almost certainly need to download the latest video card drivers before it will run. If you have a limited computer you can adjust the display to take less cycles. Got the latest or want an excuse to buy the latest hottest machine Trainz will take full advantage. You might like to check the supported video cards though before you buy.

Grim Fandango (Jewel Case) Review

Grim Fandango (Jewel Case)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was very dubious when I started playing Grim Fandango. An adventure game with polygons? And the SCUMM menu interface system that was in every single past Lucasarts adventure game was gone? But I gave it a try. Thank goodness I did.
Grim Fandango is a story about Manny Calavera, a travel agent for the souls of the dead. He sells packages to the departed for their four year journey to their just rewards, and if he sells enough he can earn enough to make his own trip someday.
Imagine the theme of Casablanca with some mexican folklore and Mayan art thrown in for fun. Add big orange demons, hot rods, killer beavers, cat races, and the grim reaper and you have Grim Fandango.
The story is supurb and the voice acting was top notch. It's very difficult to do a dramatic yet humorous story, but somehow this game pulls it off. Grim Fandango could yank me to the brink of tears one moment and cause me to almost bust a gut another.
The things that make a good adventure game are all there. Logical puzzles that don't cause your gameplay to come to a standstill until you solve them, good acting, good animation, and good code! If I were ever forced to reccomend only on adventure game to someone, this would be it! Especially at the new low price!

Racing fans unite as we search for another racing game that aspires to be as worthy as GTR2. If you have GTR2,then read on. If you don't have GTR2 then go search for it first and buy it before this game. Its hands down the best racing sim on pc ever. That being said, Race 07 is a worth alternative to GTR2. Featuring more than 300 cars in nine different racing classes, RACE 07
includes the full 2006 and 2007 seasons of the FIA World Touring Car
Championships (FIA WTCC) as well as 8 more classes on 32 tracks from
all over the world.
So let us jump into it and start reviewing it!
Graphics: While not the most important part of a game, this still matters. Race 07 has good graphics and very nice details of the cars and tracks. I might even say they are on par with GTR2, but many of the details are missing. The replays are nice and the game runs smoothly on my 7800GSOC card. I run it at near max settings on my old P4HT and 2gb ram. You can change all the views to the typical camera angles, but there is one little difference I really like. There is one camera angle that is over your dashboard only looking thru the glass. It is my favorite because it looks like your are in widescreen format! You can see everything in front of you just like a real car. There is no steering wheel in the way like other camera angles, but just the dash and the glass. Graphics are not as good as Toca3 or GTR2 but it still performs nicely.
Sounds and controls: the game audio is what separates GTR2 from Race07. R07 has pretty much the normal race sounds found it games, but with less detail as GTR2. The engines and shifting are nicely done, but nothing special here. Could have been better, but not the best either. I do love the controls here. Whether you use a gamepad, keyboard, stick, or wheel, you feel like you are racing and controlling the car. Toca 3 race controls are average compared to this game. I love knowing the car will turn when I turn it, and slide thru the corners when i let off the gas. You can very all settings for tire wear, and be careful not to overdrive in corners. You will wear your tires out!
Overall this is a very good racing game. While not as good as GTR2, I like it better than Toca3. The only other game that is equal to GTR2 is rFactor Racing. That game is perhaps the best, even over GTR. YOu can't buy it in a store, but is available for download off their site. So if you have none of these titles, I'd rank GTR and Rfactor #1, and this game next. This is a very good pc game, and it is system friendly. You don't have to have super specs to run it on high settings. A very good racing game!

Ghostbusters: The Video Game Review

I was super excited about this game when I got it. After running through a couple hours of problems on PC I went to buy the Xbox 360 version. The game is awesome but not on the PC.
Here's some of the issues I experienced with the PC version.
1. The installer only works on the default mode. You can install to a different directory but you don't get 6 files needed to run the game. Installing to the default location then copying the missing files to the custom location fixes the issue. (it's also a REALLY slow install)
2. The game does not fully use multiple processors. If you're running a dual/triple/quad core processor the game will only really use 1. There's even a warning on the back of the box stating this. I'm running a triple core processor and the game seemed to run ok despite the load not being balanced.
3. Load time of levels/maps is EXTREMELY slow. Expect to see load times between 30 to 60 seconds. This may be related to the processor issue but I'm not sure.
4. Controls are made for a controller, not a mouse. You use WADS for moving and your mouse for looking around. When you're busting ghosts you need to zap them a while then wrangle them. Wrangling requires you to move your mouse in the opposite direction of the ghosts movement. Unfortunately it also means you move the mouse quickly to the edge of your mat, pick it up, recenter the mouse, and do it again. A trackball would probably be fine or a controller. Using a mouse is a bit of a pain.
The reason this game is 1/2 the price of the Xbox360 and PS3 versions is because it doesn't have multiplayer. (And was put on the PC as an afterthought IMO.) It's a fun game but you will play through it once or twice on the PC and be done with it. I give Atari props for reducing the price.
If you buy this game used make sure the instruction manual is with the game. There is a game key you will need inside the manual.

Stoked: Big Air Edition Review

This game is absolutely a must own for any snowboarder and for any non snowboarder who enjoys a good, well built game. If you are familiar with the Skate series of games, then the controls here won't feel to different for you. If you are more familiar with the Tony Hawk series, then the controls will take a little more getting used to. I have seen some reviews that say this game starts out slowly, but I did not feel that way at all. This is by far the best recreation of riding a mountain in the back-country to date. The Dynamic Weather System in the game is also worth mentioning since it plays a lot on how you will ride. Some days are heavy storms and deep pow, others are bluebird as can be. Go pick it up and play it. You won't regret it.

Portal Review

The game is a blast to play, if you are into physics-based puzzles. I'm not going to describe it, because it's well-described elsewhere (Wikipedia, for instance). So the question comes down to, "Is it worth buying?" And the answer is a qualified yes.
The game is short. Yes, really short. Compared to the typical puzzle game ("Myst", etc.), you blast through this in half the time (or less). But what is cut out is all the "envirnoment exploration". It has just as many puzzles as the typical puzzle game, but none of that walking around and looking at the scenery stuff. No bits where you have to go to island A to get the key that opens a lock in island B, which gives you the answer to a puzzle back on island A again, etc.
But it's not sudoku, either. GLaDOS is hilarious and menacing at the same time. Even with no other visible characters to interact with, the plot is a surprisingly important part of the experience. You start to get emotionally attached to the idea that you are a lab rat trying to get out of the maze before you get euthanized.
So, yes, it's worth the money. It's short, but intense. In the same way that an hour-long movie might be better than that same movie stretched out to three hours, I'm not sure the game would have worked if it was much longer than it is. In fact, I bought the whole "Orange Box" just to try this game, and I'm happy with the purchase. (That doesn't mean I'm not also going to play Half-Life, eventually.)
If I want to just kill hours on the computer, I can play solitaire. What I wanted was what I got -- an exciting and challenging set of puzzles with a surprisingly compelling plot as a bonus.

Fallout New Vegas Review

Fallout New Vegas
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
War...War never changes. But Fallout has over the course of its long-winded history.
It started as a spiritual sequel to 'Wasteland', CRPG that started 'Post-Apocalyptic' gameplay back in 1988 by Interplay, whose division Black Isle is behind seminal CRPG classic such as 'Baldur's Gate' and yes, you guessed it, 'Fallout' and 'Fallout 2'.
After Interplay was disintegrated, some of the people went to Bioware, some of them went on to found Troika, talented but unfortunate developer who met its demise after three original and interesting but very buggy CRPG with dissimal sales. Some of them went on to found Obsidian, yet another talented but somewhat disappointing developer whose track record includes 'Knights of the Old Republic 2', 'Neverwinter Nights 2', 'Alpha Protocol' and upcoming 'Dungeon Siege 3'.
Why am I reciting a history lesson here? When Bethesda acquired the right for 'Fallout' IP from Interplay and released its biggest financial success yet with 'Fallout 3', fans were divided into two distinctive factions and has been feuding over which is better.
Faction Red: Bethesda ruined the memory of the greatest CRPG of all time by dumbing down everything we loved about our precious franchise. It's 'Oblivion with guns'.
Faction Blue: Bethesda successfully resuscitated the dead franchise by streamlining many archaic elements and implementing new refreshing elements. It retains all the core elements from 'Fallout'. We love it.
I personally love all of them and none of them are perfect to feud over petty differences in semantics.
After court-feuding over who's got the right to the entire 'Fallout' series, Bethesda settled with the right to all future single-player Fallout game and right to license the right to Interplay to the development of 'Fallout MMORPG'. So both 'Fallout 4' and 'Fallout Online' are coming; both will be published by Bethesda and 'Fallout 4' will be also developed by Bethesda.
So with the help of creative minds behind the original 2D isometric Fallout games using the same engine and costruction set Bethesda did for FO3, can Obsidian right the wrong by Bethesda? (Bethesda still owns the IP and publishes it.) That has been the question by Faction Red.
If you are a fan of 'Fallout 3', rest assured FONV is exactly like FO3 with nothing taken away with some newly improved elements added. You will feel right at home with the game. Control, menu, movement, combat, Pipboy and VATS are all identical. What's added are new perks system, new aiming system and new NPC companion command system.
Unlike FO3, there are tons more factions now in play and you can choose to side with certain faction with consequences. Faction dynamics play much more intimate and important role, and are tied directly to the choices you have to make (think Morrowind). You cannot possibly satisfiy everyone in FONV. You'll have to actually play multiple playthrough to experience everything. Choices you make will definitely make the differrence in character interaction and will give out whopping 27 unique important quests all littered with different endings with each ending giving you various permutations (think Gothic and The Witcher), unlike the cookie-cutter, same-difference 5 endings FO3 offered. Every time you make someone beneficiary, you will make someone else unhappy. All of your choices will resullt in some type of consequences. There is no more good and evil morality play here. This time, it is a wild wild west. Everyone is a cutthroat. In fact, style of the game is reminiscent of old western movie and FO3 rolled into one.
Dialogues are much more sarcastic and darkly humorous. Voice-works are well-done by many celebrities. Characters are wackier. General tone of the game is morally even murkier and overall darker, albeit humorous on par with the first two games (especially Fallout 2).
Soundtrack once again retains the signature feel of the series by utilizing slew of retro 40s and 50s classic pop music. Orchestral score is once again done by Inon Zur.
While level-cap has been increased to 30, leveling up needs more attention because you cannot be a jack of all trade in FONV; especially in light of new 'Hard-core' mode that is included in the game. You need to hunt and cook / harvest / steal and eat, you need to drink and you need to sleep to survive or pay the consequence. You cannot carry infinite amount of ammo either. You can freely choose whether you want to play as 'Hard-core'.
You can now mod your own weapons on the work bench with more variety and freedom than you were able to in FO3.
Graphics are still competent but are aging fast now. The general tone of the color scheme is changed from green to orange. While Obsidian claims graphic is slightly improved, I think graphically everything looks little bit uglier overall, probably stemming from mismatched color schemes throughout the environment. Sometimes, the world feels like messy crayon artwork from kindergarten wall. But the world is much livelier and you now see some level of active civilization represented by glowing neons of Vegas Strip.
So it sounds like I am trashing FO3 and praising FONV to no end. Not so fast. FO 3 is still a great game but I like FONV slightly better in terms of the improved gameplay. However, FO3 is much better in depth of contents, presentation and storytelling. Morrowind and Oblivion is still my king of CRPG with much stronger community support. So what is wrong with the game?
Welcome to the bugfest 2010. It's a grand feast of technical mess; frame rate stuttering issue, game crashing and freezing, characters stuck in the environment, disappearing act of characters and items (even save-game files make the cameos in the act) are some of the widely reported bugs across the all platforms. Yes, CRPG and nonlinear, free-formed, open-ended game in gigantic scope as big as FONV will always be buggier than linear, focused games like Halo and Modern Warfare due to virtually impossible task of QA stemming from endless in-game possibilities, and yes, nothing gamebreaking, But there are tons of minor glitches that are annoying and tiresome when you play the game that gives you anywhere from 40-200 hours and upward. This is the buggiest Fallout entry.
Here's a helpful site to alleviate your potential problems.
[...]
Another thing is everything in FONV is awfully familiar with FO3, not necessarily a bad thing in itself. Just don't expect the same kind of awe-inducing wow moment like when you came out of Vault 101 for the first time in FO3 or cinematic end-battle.
If you are not a fan of CRPG or you hated FO3, there's nothing new for you to see here. Just like FO3, this is not a FPS, even with enhanced aiming mechanics. Hit points and damage are governed by your stats. This game will be just as boring as FO3 to you.
If you are a fan of open-world game such as GTA, be warned; FONV is not a open-world action game. It is open-ended, nonlinear, free-formed CRPG that focuses on traversing and finding new places, engaging with different characters, performing quests, dungeon-crawling and "role-playing". There are tons of small, interesting and quite often excellent depiction of personal conflicts and backstories, but there's no 'save the humanity' type of grand plot and cinematic cutscenes between each level.
And if you think 'Borderlands', which is by the way solid and entertaining action game, is better than FO3, stay away from FONV. Customization of stats, leveling up, armors and weapons by themselves do not make action game like 'Borderlands' a RPG. You'll be wondering why your excellent marksmanship repeatedly proven via endless hours of online multiplayer session is not effective in Nevada / Mojave wasteland.
Last, but not least, PC version of FONV utilizes Steam, which is the most popular DRM and the least intrusive DRM currently available in the market. It offers many incentive, convenience and great pricing for older games compared to other DRM, but Steam is still DRM. Convenience of not having to worry about the actual gamedisc by using Steam is nothing compared to not having any DRM so we can install the game and put away our game for display and collection. We won't be worrying about gamedisc if DRM doesn't check the disc every five second during the gameplay if the disc is authentic in the first place. Dual release with non-Steam version after initial release or guaranteed future DRM deactivation patch will surely pacify every morally just legitimate paying customers who genuinely want to support developers but are turned off by hands-on DRM.
So why did I still choose PC version over console version?; GECK, easier patching and community support, because I expected that game like FONV would always be buggy. To Bethesda's credit, the game looks and plays exactly the same on either PC or console, barring framerate, graphics and resolution, so the experience will be identical unlike other CRPGs like 'Dragon Age: Origins', 'Two Worlds', 'Sacred 2', 'Divinity II', and 'Risen' on consoles to name a few.
But to Steam's credit, it's 'one-time only' activation through Steam and it doesn't require for you to keep the disc running in your optical drive once the game is installed. There's no constant Internet connection requirement while you play your game and there's no installation limit. And if you are into social-networking aspects of Steam, you won't have much problems. But if you are turned off by anything other than disc-based DRM, you are warned. I found myself grudgingly and reluctantly giving up to the spell of Fallout series this time but this is only...Read more›
