Bachmann Trains Mountaineer Ready-to-Run Large Scale Train Set Review

Bachmann Trains Mountaineer Ready-to-Run Large Scale Train Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is one of the latest offerings in the Bachmann Big Hauler line which has been producing great value trains since it was introduced in the 1980s. It is made to run in the garden, but will create a "jaw-dropping" effect around your Christmas tree as well. You should probably also know that Bachmann Trains offers world-class warranties and service on all of its products. Unfortunately Bachmann track doesn't work outside, so if you actually do put this train in your garden, consider AristoCraft track as an "add-on." You'll want a bigger track circle anyway, to give this big train "room to stretch out."

Beginning construction in the mountains of post?Civil War Tennessee, the East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad Company was known locally as the Eat Taters and Wear No Clothes railroad. Narrow gauge operations began in 1881, and after nearly 60 years of operation, developing interstate highway systems and the torrential rains of 1940 worked to bring about the railroad?s demise. Following a series of purchases and acquisitions (singing cowboy Gene Autry once owned an ET & WNC locomotive), the railroad was resurrected in 1956, going on to become one of North Carolina?s favorite travel attractions. NOTE: This set is NOT recommended for outdoor use.

Henry the green engine is one of my favorites. The model works very well and is able to pull heavy loads at relatively high speeds. If you are someone who likes to collect bachmann trains, especially thomas trains, then this is a must have. One of the best engines ever, would definitley recommend.

After my twins saw me take out my ironing board and my iron, they also wanted to iron their clothes. When this ironing board arrived with hangers and the iron, my twins started right away ironing and hung up their clothes on the hangers. It was really cute seeing them get to work!!!

Bachmann Trains Steam Digital Commander Ready-to-Run DCC-Equipped HO Train Set Review

Bachmann Trains Steam Digital Commander Ready-to-Run DCC-Equipped HO Train Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the set for my 5 year old boy. He is having a ton of fun with it for the last few days. A word of caution. HO models are fragile. Period. If you have a boy in crashing/smashing phase, this is not the right toy to buy -- wait till he is a bit older (recommended minimum age is 8 years -- it's printed right there on the box). You'd definitely want to play with and supervise your youngster while playing with this train set at least at first. If you are giving this set to a very young boy (or girl), explain first that this type of toy is fragile and that some amount of patience and care will be needed while playing with it.
At first, I was worried about the price. Then realized that this set isn't that expensive after all, compared with what else is out there. Or compared with Thomas wooden railroad (few pieces of plain solid painted wood on wheels for $$$). Considering that HO scale locomotives I saw in few local shops are running around $60-80 for cheap ones, and up to few hundred for more fancy stuff, this set is actually rather good deal (MSRP is $260, Amazon sells it for around $150). Bachmann has two more sets that come with all you need for DCC operation (both DCC controller and DCC locomotive in the set) that cost about the same with diesel engines. However, my son wanted steam engine, so that's the one we got. Bachmann makes few more other sets that include DCC equipped locomotives, but not DCC controller.
The packaging could have been a bit better. I'd recommend an adult taking the locomotive and cars out of the packaging. Just don't force anything and you'll be all right. I've got the cars out relatively easy, however the locomotive needed a bit of work till it finally came out. The locomotive and the cars are running smooth for their price range. Depending on the age of your kid, she or he might need a bit of help putting the train on the track (it's an HO scale after all, requiring a bit of precision that very young hands might not yet have).
You should definitely read at least the manual for DCC controller. It would be nice if Quick Start guide was included. I can easily see people connecting everything, not reading the manual and not being able to figure out how to start locomotive. In short, locomotive is pre-programmed at position 3. So, after you connect everything, hit number 3 to select position 3, turn the knob and off you go. To turn on the light on the locomotive, press function key to go into the function mode (while position 3 is still selected) then button 10. While still in function mode, you can press button 1 to dim or un-dim the light. To exit function mode, press function button once more. Use stop button to suspend all activity on the railroad, and press second time to resume.
The system comes with DCC locomotive and very simple and very basic DCC controller. Oh joy. I wish those existed when I was a kid! The turnout is manually operated. It would be nice if set included DCC controlled turnout, for complete experience. A magnet that can be placed under the track for uncoupling action is included in the set too. However, don't expect young kids to master it. It could be just the couplers that are included with the set, but I also have problem uncoupling cars using the under-track magnet from time to time. The E-Z Mate couplers are easy to couple on straight track, they simply snap together. They might need a bit of help connecting on curved track.
The 0-6-0 locomotive included in the set is silver colored Union Pacific. Checking Bachmann web site, they also have the same 0-6-0 locomotive with Great Northern color scheme which I liked a bit more, but not as part of a set. The only real complaint about the locomotive is that the front coupler is not E-Z Mate and doesn't seem to be compatible with the E-Z Mate couplers on the cars. Actually, it looks like it was more of decoration then functioning coupler. The rear coupler (which is located on the tender) is the same E-Z Mate as the ones on the cars, and connects nicely. The connection between locomotive and tender doesn't use coupler (it's a simple pin system). The light on the locomotive can be turned on and off and brightness adjusted to full or half remotely from the controller.
The wheels on the cars use relatively simple mounting. The instructions say they may come out in case of rough handling (or during the transport). However, they are easy to snap back on. If you have a car that seems to be de-railing all the time, making too much noise, or simply doesn't seem to be going smoothly, check if all the wheels are properly seated (and re-seat them if needed).
The E-Z track system is simply standard HO tracks with standard connectors (exactly the same as those I had 30 years ago), simply glued to plastic roadbed. The plastic guides on the roadbed make it a bit easier to line up connectors, and the whole thing is a bit simpler to assemble on carpet then the plain tracks without roadbed. Few of the (metal) connectors needed to be worked-in a bit the first time we were connecting the tracks. On the plus side, tracks with roadbed definitely do look much much nicer. On the minus side, these are specific to Bachmann, so you are kind of locking yourself in. You can buy miles of plain tracks (without roadbed) dirt cheap on local train shows. They should be no trouble connecting to these tracks, however it may be a bit flimsy to connect them (due to different elevation and having to go over plastic connector).
Looking at [...] website, they have DCC operated E-Z track turnouts and switches, but only as separate items, not as part of an expansion set. It would be nice if they were to start selling DCC version of their standard expansion set.

BRIO Light and Sound Timber Train Review

BRIO Light and Sound Timber Train
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We originally bought a battery operated train that moves on its own along the track but that didn't work well for our young children. They wanted to push it along faster or backwards or just stop it while it was moving and that causes damage to the train and was confusing to the kids. The liked the train because of the light and sound but were frustrated by not knowing how to play with it.
This train is a great idea in that it works like any other train for the wooden tracks; you just push it along. However the children also get the light and sound that they liked from the other train, just without the confusion.
The two trailing cars are a good value given the engine by itself is not much less. Young kids might have problems with these cars since the logs separate from the carrier so they are a bit more complicated to push or pick up. Still this is a nice set. We also got a green diesel engine that works the same way and there is also an orange light and sound engine available that looks nice.
This engine has been stepped on and thrown about the room and has stood up well. This is highly recommended for young children (2-4).

CAT Construction Express Train Review

This was my Son's favorite gift! He is 4.5. Follow Amazon's recommended ages. I read the reviews prior to purchase plz this is NOT for a 2 year old. It would be no fun for you or him/her. It seems durable enough. It's not like the ole metal trains but hey this is 2008 everything is plastic and from China. Of course I would not recommend eating any part of the train or track ;-)
After showing my Son and helping snap the track together he was off and running and it's been at least 4 hrs! We made a tunnel out of the box it came in since this is much bigger than his Thomas wooden stuff. Nice change from the wooden or take along. Takes 3 C batteries not included. Enjoy and Happy Holidays and New Year!

Thomas & Friends Helping Hook Kevin Review

Thomas and Friends Helping Hook Kevin
Average Reviews:

My son really liked Kevin when we saw the Hero of the Rails Thomas movie (he's the guy always dropping things), so he was quite excited to receive this toy. But then he was a bit disappointed that the attachment scheme between Kevin and his trailers is different than that used for all other Trackmaster Thomas toys, so he can't interchange other trailers or cars with Kevin's. And now that Kevin is all over the stores near us (Meijer, Target) at a lower price, I'm sorry I hurried to buy him on Amazon.

I gave this train to my grandson for Christmas. The wheels-?motor started squealling and stopping on the track shortenly after he started playing with it. I had to return the train and have still, after over 2 weeks, have not heard anything from the place where I purchased it. Makes me wounder about buying on line- no one to deal with such problems- just have to take a leap of faith to get it replaced.

LEGO Creator Mini Trains Review

LEGO Creator Mini Trains
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this as a gift for my little train enthusiast, not realizing that it was aged 6-12, and he's about to turn 4. Happily, though, the directions that came with the kit were extremely clear, and it was a great Mommy and Me project to build the first train. Amazingly enough, the kit utilizes all the pieces for the steam train at least, and there are quite a few of them. My little guy found each piece, and assembled what he could under my instruction, and I helped out when he could not get the pieces to pop together. The finished train even rolls, which thrilled him, and we BOTH felt a sense of accomplishment when it was completed. Highly recommended (under $[..]? SOOO worth it!)
***Addendum, Feb, 2009 - This should be priced at around [...] dollars.

My son really has fun playing with his new wash center. I couldn't tell you where he saw it the first time but was asking for it for 2-3 weeks. He was very specific and knew exactly what it was called. When we found it online we had to buy it. He received it for his birthday and hasn't stopped playing with it. I personally thinks it's pretty cool too. NO BATTERIES needed. The train powering the wash is ingenious. Great toy.

This product is obviously made by the same company that was producing the Bachmann line of 0n30 trains for hobbyists and christmas villages. It is not designed young kids, but is a fine model for the adult model railroader. Thomas And Friends Wooden Railway - Steaming Around Sodor Battery Powered Set Review

Thomas And Friends Wooden Railway - Steaming Around Sodor Battery Powered Set
Average Reviews:

This track does not fit together properly. One side has a 4 inch piece and a 6 inch piece (total: 10). The other side has a 4 inch piece and a 8 inch piece (total: 12). Because of the missing 2 inches, the train falls off the corners and gets stuck under the bridge.
Incredibly frustrating trying to put this together. Fortunately, I Googled the set's name and found a bunch of reviews on Target.com elaborating on the same problem.
(Note the bridge support pieces don't hold together well either.)
