Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth Review

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This game has a lot of good ideas, and implements a number of them surprisingly well. In fact, almost everything innovative that this game tries, it succeeds at. Going insane feels like you're going insane, bolting doors and shoving bookcases in front of them to stop pursuers is adrenaline-pumping, having to treat the proper injuries that result from different ways of taking damage makes sense within the game, and the creepy atmosphere is so pervasive that you're practically suffocating on it throughout the entire game.
Where it goes wrong is the most trivial, inane, annoying details.
Checkpoint's frequently come only before extensive cutscenes (upwards of several minutes), or before long walks or tough obstacles, so if you make one mistake, not only have you lost all the progress since the last save, but you frequently have to repeat the same lengthy cutscene or retread the exact same long hallways over and over.
Frequent hard-to-see insta-kill traps often leave me wondering exactly why I died, which compounds the problems of the last point.
The game frequently mistakes an intent to bolt a door as an intent to open a door; trying to close a door behind you, oftentimes the door will catch you and push you into whatever is chasing you; for the game to register your attempt to close the door, you have to be standing just so, which can be very hard to do when you're trying to protect someone that's following you.
Then there's the glitches: if you run the game on Vista, a certain segment involving the artillery guns of a naval ship won't work right, and you'll have to download a save game just beyond that point. Also, the final segment in the game is almost literally impossible without some extremely precise bunny-hopping, and I ended up having to cheat to beat it.
In short: this is a very, very good game, much better than I expected, but you have to be able to stomach more questionable design decisions, poor scripting, and buggy interfaces than it's reasonable to expect of any player. A supermodel with headlice, right next to Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines.

Global Agenda Review

Global Agenda
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Global Agenda is great for several reasons. First off I would like to say that I've personally never seen a team thats so devoted to making great content for it's MMO after post production. All the updates and patches have always added something new and exciting. The patch 1.3 aka Sandstorm is going to be off the chain and is to be realeased in a couple days (note that its 04/22/2010 when I made this review). MOST OF THE FEATURES ARE FREE TO PLAY FOREVER EXCEPT FOR ONE THING. (It's impossible for me to cover everything in one review and actually have people read it, so I suggest going to [...] and checking out everything you can.)
There are roughly four types of combat:
PvE: A player joins a que (or with an already created group) and plays with a team totaling four players. The object is to blast your way through mutliple enemys, robotic and cybernetic, to face the final boss. The difficulty of the missions after easy and medium is much more potent and tactics and team communication are REQUIRED for succes. (the game comes with VOIP, but you can type statements too)
PvP: Comes in three different flavors
Agency vs Agency: Player made agencys vie for control of a territory and requires team resource management, diplomacy with other players and various other strategies. (THE ONLY THING YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR WITH A SUBSCRIPTION)
Mercenary: If your don't pay for the subscription then no prob, you can still experience most of the content you get in AvA. When you join this, you are basicaly setting yourself up as a mercenary, and you fight other players in roughly six game play modes which boil down to;Bombing the other guys base, controling an area, defending zones, and escorting resources. All require teamwork to succeed, and this is really were you get paid (in game).
Virtual Arena: If you just feel like testing that weapon you unlocked, or practicing your pvp skills with no consequence, then this is were you go. I must say that you should be wary the first time you are transported in, as noobs will be quickly dispatched lol.
The new 3.1 patch will also include several new gameplay modes plus new weps, armor, and tonnes of other things. But the biggest thing it will offer is a new open world to explore.

Axis & Allies: Iron Blitz Edition Review

Axis and Allies: Iron Blitz Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Despite the problems of this game (dim AI, some bugs), it is still the best strategy game I've ever played, next to chess. I've spent countless hours over-the-board, but now I can play with friends in about half the time with out all the mess. We used to constantly run out of chips, or scatter the pieces with the dice, or we'd argue about the rules.
The game has many new choices, including marines, destroyers, paratroopers, kamakazis, etc, and also the option to edit the pieces' or territories' statistics. Don't bother playing the computer, unless you're new to the game, because the only challenge is to see how quickly you can win. You can play multi-player from one computer, with a network card, or over the internet (MSN Zone). There are a few bugs, but save often and you won't have too many worries about it.
The game is out-of-print and Hasbro Interactive sold the rights to Infogrames, so your best bet is put in an "auction alert" on amazon and wait until you receive an email telling you that someone is selling it.

Half Life 1 (Jewel Case) Review

Half Life 1 (Jewel Case)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Half Life is a great game, completely revolutionized the shooter-on-rails style game. I generally don't like those types of games, because the game play is limited... it's just repetition really... then the enemies get stronger.
So, personally, i get bored with these games if the terrain and environments don't change much, or if there isn't alot of strategizing needed. Shoot-outs are boring to me, because eventually you know you'll get good enough to beat it, it's not really mentally taxing.
Beyond that, it's great. the monsters are great, the story is compelling, the levels are well constructed, the pace is super fast and intense and heart-pounding. I opften had to put it down because it was just too intense, i needed a break.
Way better than HL2 despite the graphical differences.
get it.

The game had me dropping my mouse, backing away from the monitor and out the door. The focus here is on how Environmental Audio can go a long way to scare the be-jesus out of you. And it does it well.
Otherwise, an intelligent RPG woven together with a first-person shooter, but with a very clever, puzzle-solving touch.
Basically, you awaken from cryo-sleep on a derelict spacecraft that was sent on a mission to deep space. You awaken to find things have gone horribly, horribly wrong as some form of alien life has taken over. It's all up to you to solve the mystery.

Wizardry 8 Review

Wizardry 8
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Wizardry is epic.
This reviewer is 23 and has played many, many role-playing games. After a while, you become jaded, and get picky about your likes and dislikes. Sometimes games seem to just blend into one another and they aren't all that unique and distinguishable.
This one is different. It has to be - it is expected. It's a Sir-Tech game, after all. It's Wizardry.
In the 1980s, the big three were Wizardry, Ultima, and Might and Magic. I've always felt Wizardry was king of 3d, Ultima of top-down/isometric, and Might and Magic was just a runner-up.
Wizardry is "classic" or "old-school." There is (of course) an excellent story, above-average music, fine gameplay, and decent graphics (the 3d engine is impressive - it draws you in but I'll leave it at "good" and not "amazing") - the monsters are the best graphics in the game with their animations - and they are awesome. Couldn't get much better there. But what makes Wizardry 8 classic are not these features (enjoyable as they are)...
Wizardry 8 is about characters - the essence of role-playing. It features extensive character generation (and brings back the "good ol' days" before fast-food generation of bland characters became standard. There are so many races and classes, so many combinations to try, so many statistics to become involved with (should I allocate points towards Wizardry to improve my mages' spell points, or stock points to make less of his spells fail? should I have my rogue become an expert lock-picker or better at pickpocketing first? or should I put points in other places...) Fighters can get lots of strength, Priests piety, etc. There are many standard attributes (strength, intelligence, piety, vitality, dexterity, speed, senses, etc), and then combat categories to put points in -- close combat, ranged combat, dual strike -- weapons: from bows and slings to maces and swords and axes -- to characteristics like mythology (the higher the more you know about your enemies), artifacts (exactly what is this cloak I just picked up and what does it do?), to scouting ("monsters approaching!!") This process is extremely interesting and sucks you in whenever you advance levels. After all, you have six characters to flesh out and differentiate. Character generation in the first place is great.
This is the essence of why Wizardry is the best CRPG. You completely control all levels of your characters (you form a party of six with optional NPCs being recruited later). You pick your characters' pictures, statistics, names, and even personalities. You literally create personal roles to play for hours and hours (and hours).
A side note on personalities - they are awesome. There are personalities to pick for each character such as aggressive, kindly, chaotic, eccentric (definitely one of the most entertaining), cunning, and laidback. Once chosen, your characters speak tons and tons of lines of dialogue echoing their personalities. The eccentric mage (if you so choose), may refer to himself in third-person. Wonderful. Lines are spoken throughout the game in all instances - just adventuring, combat, winning a battle, someone dying (comments on who has dibs on a dead character's stuff is pretty funny), a great attack made, a miscast spell that affects your party - our hero has made a horrible mistake..
The combat is also great. Wizardry is combat-intensive. It is generally turn-based (but can be continuous) -- you pick your characters' options a round starts - monsters go, you go - determined by speed, level, etc. It involves elements of strategy, from setting up, to choosing actions for your characters and watching them unfold after your options are chosen. Many classes can cast spells ranging from affecting a single enemy to a group - classics such as fireball and magic missiles - to spells that affect conditions of monsters: nauseate them with Noxious Fumes, make them go nuts with Insanity, freeze them with Web...and enemies are intelligent. They will circle your party if they can to attack your lowly mage hiding in the back. Try working your way out of that one...
Experience is gained, levels are upped, points for statistics are distributed...all while adventuring in a wonderful world with great people. The NPCs were labored over. They all have unique voices and personalities as well, and respond to questions you ask via either keywords typed in or selected from their dialogue or a keyword box. It reminds me of talking to people in real life - a favorite is a woman in the first town, very Midwest and small town who is really nice to you and loves to gossip. Reminds me of an aunt in Indiana I have. NPCs voice their reactions to events in the world and have opinions on just about any topic you can think of asking them about. The combination of EXCELLENT (EXCELLENT!!!) voice-acting and writing make these interactions extremely enjoyable. They really add to the atmosphere of the game.
From the graphics, to writing, gameplay, combat, voice-acting, storyline, character interaction, even interface (yes, it is one of the best ever - easy to use, uncomplicated to learn, logical), this game is hands-down a complete winner. It is the best CRPG I have ever played and I have played them for well over 15 years.
For those people who have played things such as Diablo, the Baldur's Gate series, Planescape:Torment, Icewind Dale, you will love this game. It includes the best elements from some of those games and makes them all even better in a 3D world. It also reminds me of the classics (Bard's Tale, The SSI Gold Box games, etc.) It has definitive elements of Wizardry that are completely unique - from combat to NPC interaction - and the whole thing put together will suck you in and hours will pass before you know it.
BUY THIS GAME!
The only thing you will regret is not having more time to play.

Wizardry 8 is an epic fantasy RPG that picks up where Wizardry 7: Crusaders of the Dark Savant left off. Fans of the series will recall that all hell had broken loose at the end of Wizardry 7. The Dark Savant had taken flight with a device called the Astral Dominae, an incredibly powerful artifact containing the secret of life itself. Following him are two powerful races, the T'Rang and the Umpani, as well as your own brave party of adventurers. Everyone is headed to Dominus, a world on the cusp of the Cosmic Circle, birthplace of the Astral Dominae, and home of the Cosmic Lords. Many paths will converge on Dominus, and many long-hidden secrets will be revealed.
Newcomers to the series will enjoy a special beginning just for those who haven't played the previous game. Whether you're an old Wizardry adventurer or new, you'll enjoy a unique, well-developed role-playing world of unusual depth and freedom. The game is not strictly linear: if you're smart enough and tough enough, you can go wherever you want. You can team up with some of the factions you'll meet--and then double-cross them, if it suits your fancy.

This is a completely on-rails shooter. No choice about which way to go; if you can open a door, that's the way you need to go and no worries about there being a better route some other way.
Difficulty is very uneven; some areas are totally easy while others are insanely difficult, even on the easiest setting. Enemies see you and know exactly where you are the second you pop up your little head. Finally I gave up and used cheat codes to plow through to the end.
Graphics are good overall, but can't carry a game by themselves.

I remember playing TIE fighter for hours when in college. Hands down one of the best games available for any computer.
The missions are designed to be difficult enough to make you try multiple times, yet I never felt the need to throw the computer out the window because I just couldn't beat that one superhard level.
For Star Wars fans, many familiar characters appear in the game such as Mon Mothma and Darth Vader (when you are a good enough pilot, you are Vader's wing man for a mission).
One of those games I play and replay. Easy to get wrapped up in and really feel like you are there. There is a reason why many critics consider this one of the best PC games ever. I think I'll get off the net and play it right now!

Deus Ex Review

Deus Ex
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Most of the time when you think of a first-person shooter, you picture fast-paced slaughter and mayhem like in the legendary Quake and Unreal line. Deus Ex, however, adds an unprecedented level of intelligence to a genre previously devoid of any thought other than "if it moves, kill it".
Deus Ex follows Agent JC Denton on his first assignment for UNATCO - an anti-terrorist group with wide-reaching jurisdiction. JC is a special nanotech-augmented cyborg with a wide range of superhuman abilities. You are able to customize your character throughout the game in an RPG-esque style. Want to go in with guns blazing? Increase training in heavy arms and pistols. Want to take out the bad guys from a distance? Focus on Rifle training. Want to hack into the security system and have it eliminate the bad guys for you? Train heavily on electronics and computers. Want to be able to heal yourself instantly? Train up on Medicine. Depending on how you train your character, the gameplay changes significantly. This not only adds tremendous amounts of depth, but also increases the replay value. As if that wasn't enough, the storyline is very intricate and boasts some superb twists. You will end up not knowing who to trust as the game goes on. The plotline culminates in three possible endings, depending on whose side you choose.
Highest possible recommendation.

No one but you.

Travel the globe building a network of allies and create an alternate identity to aid you in your search for the truth. There is no one path to success. It is achieved through various means; employ stealth, strategy, or force--the choice is yours. But remember, trust no one. Even those who you keep as allies may be more than they seem. Brain Spa Review

Brain Spa
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Seeing the past reviews had me curious, so did a check for more reviews & info. I love it! I tried the game "Brain Booster" but didn't like it at all. I bought "Mind Quiz" which is ok, but boring. This & Brain Challenge are my favorites & happy.
This one has:
Main area is divided up into buildings in a town from an aerial view.
Logic/Calculation: "Gray Matter Market" - find the 2-4 items w/price tag that add up to $ total.
Perception/ID: "Cotex Cleaners" - match the picture of the article of clothing to the circulating articles of clothing.
Logic/Relational: "Cranial Candies" - put the colored candy pieces in the box so they create a pattern with like colors touching.
Memory/Visual: "Dendrite Diner" - remember the pictures of what the customers order & serve them (so far seen over 8 at a time)
Language/Categories: "Neuron Newstand" - match 3 of the newspaper/magazine headings to their common theme. (Had up to 15 at a time so far)
Perception/Comparison: "Frontal Lob Factory" - decide if the 3 toys on the conveyor belt match the picture, reject/accept them. (seen 2 rows so far)
There are at least three more buildings that are "under construction" because I haven't unlocked in the 30 min I played. Everything is timed of course & there are daily tests as well as obviously graphs to show your progress. The animation is colorful, bright & positive. The instructions & in-game responses are given both in speech (nice acting) & typed text.
The power plant holds the daily test of different categories & the Town Hall holds the high scores (I see 13 different high scores). From what I can tell, if you score high enough, you get keys in every area & then can challenge the mayor.
Computer:
I have a 2.4 core2duo Intel, 1 gig RAM, Home Premium Vista & had no problems with the demo & the game cd.
legacygames com - 1 hour free demo & also 7 free online flash games: match color candy, newsstand, market, lab factory/toys, cleaners, spelling & auditory memory (simon using classic music).
6/2009 - I forgot to mention that as you play, it automatically gets more challenging or easier depending on the score of the previous game.
Also, unlike many new games, this one thankfully does not have a limit in installs & after filling my HDD & having to replace/mirror it, it worked beautifully including the save file.
11/2009 - The characters give you cute comments about having not seen you in a while & feel bad for you if you don't do you best, always cheerful & sure you'll do better. They are ecstatic if you do well or a new high score, almost surprised any human can do so well! ;-) I have never gotten annoyed by any repetitious acting lines which is a welcome surprise.
2/2010 - On the box, in very small print near the requirements, it says, "contains technology to prevent copying & that may conflict with some disc & virtual drives" It's not Securom or Starfoce though, nor did I have to enter a key & you don't need the disc to play once it's installed.

I bought these four pinball games one by one back in the 1990s when they were first issued by Empire, the Mac versions before OS X. (Unfortunately the Mac versions are not supported in OS X.) They are the coolest pinball games ever created. The tables, the music, the ball action, the complexity of the rules. Thief II: The Metal Age Review

Thief II: The Metal Age
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After trying the first mission in Thief 2:The Metal age I was dazzled. The developers at Ion Storm have truly lived up to the promise of a better sequel for we slobbering Thief fans. The original Thief was thought not to do well because of its twist on the first-person shooter. But when it hit the shelves it sold like hot cakes. To those of you run-and-gun fans this might not be the game for you. Thief 2 consists heavily on keeping out of sight and sticking to the shadows. You are not a war hero that can take some few thousand bullet wounds, you are no more than a common thief trying to hold your own. The game has changed a significantly since the original game. The characters in Thief 2 are much smoother and less blocky looking. The physics have also had a dramatic change with new fog effects and etc. The AI's intelligence has been increased as well. This game is fun to play and if you buy it, it will take some time to complete. It can be dificult at times so I suggest buying a strategy guide. I can't tell you how much fun it is when a nobleman offends you, and then you loot him for all he's worth. This is definetly one to get.

This game is for the more mature player unlike some of those arcadey games out there, you will not find the run and gun gametype which means your not respawning every 30 secs in a small map. go check out the website for pics, the community is growing and new content is always on the way. Ageod's American Civil War 1861-1865 Review

Ageod's American Civil War 1861-1865
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've seen varying reivews about this game from various sources, and I can see both sides of the argument. Personally, as a long standing fan of strategy games this is right down my street. A word of warning to start with, however. The game is extremely high in memory use and once you load the game onto your PC you don't need the CD in to play, which explains the high useage. PCs with lowish memory and graphics cards not entirely suitable will crash out.
The 'board' map is huge, covering from the west the Indian / Kansas territories and going east to the Atlantic, and south from the Gulf of Mexico to virtually the Canadian border. It takes time to scroll across and lagging can be frustrating unless you got a high-spec machine that works out PI in 3 seconds.
Those concerns aside the game is great. If you're into shoot-em-up or battles, forget it. Battles are done by the PC and all you get are the results. Basically, you're the guy who moves the units, assign generals and armies, ships and boats. Its a grand strategy game with at its heart the Ledger. Its here you determine the economy, resources, diplomatic and army building course of your side. Its close to the scenario of real life so that the South can win even if they appear to be losing. The North has to keep on conquering to keep the 'War' party in power and not lose the election of 1864.
Generals appear only when they are supposed to, so that the North starts with McDowell and McClellan and the South with Beauregard and A.S. Johnson. Those of you who like the 'building' aspect of strategy games, such as planning long term industry and reinforcements, will take to this part of the game. The manual is helpful but what you also need to do to begin with is use one of the inbuilt 'tuition' scenarios. Attention must be given to building armies, corps and divisions in order to avoid severe battle penalties.
Its about time someone came up with a big strategy game for this war and if you can bear the problems inherent with high memory useage then I recommend this one.
