Lionel 6-36847 Polar Express Steam Sounds Tender Review

Lionel 6-36847 Polar Express Steam Sounds Tender
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Excellent sound quality for each of the 5 types of sounds that come with this Tender: 1: Steam Whistle, 2. Bell, 3. Chugging Sound, 4. Screeching Brakes and 5. Sounds of the conductor and engineer speaking. Much louder than I expected. Its a little tricky to get the screeching brakes to work, but I was able to do it (They come on if you have the train going at full speed for awhile and then slow down half way or so). It would have been cool to have some of the actual movie dialogue for the conductor and engineer, but it is still a fun feature. My only question is what should I do with my original tender now? I have heard that there is a special coupler that allows you to run both tenders and will have to look into that.

Model VI Steam Engine Review

Model VI Steam Engine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This little oscillating steam engine and boiler combination may seem a bit pricey. The parts are basically stock materials but they are machined precisely and assemble without trouble. Only simple hand tools are required. The boiler requires soldering with a torch. The instructions are complete and throrough.
The boiler uses Sterno for fuel, heats quickly, and is relatively reliable.
While not as pretty as some, it may be just the ticket for someone without access to a machine shop and a tenth the price. I have had mine for 11 years.

Lionel Polar Express Train Set - G-Gauge Review

Lionel Polar Express Train Set - G-Gauge
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was surprised to see the negative reviews on this product, but after reading them I think most of them were from people that did not read or understand the product description. This is a 'G' scale toy plastic train with plastic track that is battery powered and is controlled by an R/C unit.
I have not seen another 'G' scale set with better quality equipment and features for the price. The engine has built-in sound that makes a steam 'chuff' noise synchronized to the speed of the engine. It also makes a steam brake release noise when it stops. It has a bell sound and whistle that you can control from the R/C unit. It has 3 speeds in both forward and reverse directions. The speeds seems very prototypical. The speed is also momentum controlled - the train speeds up and slows down at a measured pace just like a real train. The detail on the engine is quite good for a 'toy' train.
I had the same experience with the included batteries as others - they barely moved the train for a few minutes and then conked out. I replaced the standard batteries with alkaline ones and it ran for about 10 hours before needing replacement. I have switched to a compatible 9.6v rechargeable battery that works great, is cheaper to run, and environmentally better.
The packaging states the set is for kids 4 years or older. Both my 4-1/2 year old and 2 year old can run the train with the R/C controller (and did not stop playing with it for almost a week). However they do not have the dexterity to couple the cars or snap the track together. I would guess that a 5 or 6 year old would be able to assemble and operate everything without adult help. They have banged the engine, thrown the controller, and knocked the coaches around quite a bit without any damage.
For model railroaders or anyone who wants to tinker, you could add lighting to the coaches fairly easily. I think the train would work well outdoors if you want to try creating a garden railway. I do wish Lionel would make more track options - an 'X' crossing and R/L hand switches would allow expansion to a true train layout instead of just an oval or circle.
I don't think you could find a better quality radio controlled toy 'G' scale train with so many features for such a low price.

WowToyz Classic Train Set - Diesel Engine with Passenger Cars Review

WowToyz Classic Train Set - Diesel Engine with Passenger Cars

plastic model set. on plastic easy to bend rail tracks. sounds of the train are loud and good, kids love it. the turn on/off switch is in awkward position. setting up the carriages and locomotive on flexi tracks is not an easy task for even 7 year old. when need to be switched on/off the train can get off tracks easy. switch on classic powered Thomas engine toy is softer and on top, this one is at the bottom.
the transmission of locomotice is good and powerfull but rubber tyres on leading wheel set are getting off when a kid stops the train while trying to switch off that funny switch.

MRC Symphony 77 Sound Station Review

MRC Symphony 77 Sound Station
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The MRC Symphony 77 Sound Station was a complete surprise when I received it. The quality is much less than is typically expected when one purchases a product from MRC. The way they advertise their system, you almost come away with the understanding that the sould level on this thing would really blast out the railroad sounds when it's just the opposite of that. The sound would be compared to the golden era of the pocket transistor radio. I was extremely disappointed with this purchase. Even the quality of the materials used in the hand unit & speaker boxes is much less than one expects from MRC as well. If you're looking for simple train sounds & not that particular about realism, I guess this Symphony 77 would work however, if you're looking for "true to life" prototypical sound, the MRC Symphony 77 doesn't cut it!
I would say the manufacturer needs to rethink the MSRP on this product because in my opinion, it's only worth about $24.99 & I'd be hard pressed to pay that once I heard the unit. Sorry, but MRC has failed in design & quality with this product & it just isn't up to the good quality standards one expects to receive from MRC model railroad products. I'd have to give this about a 2.5 to 3.0 rating out of 10 for performance & durability. I personally would not recommend this item to any of my serious model railroading buddies. As a starter system for someone who isn't that particular with sound, I guess this product would work but... I feel even at that the MRC Symphony 77 is over-priced for what you receive. You really blew it this time MRC, sorry but I gotta give it the "thumbs down" award.

Bachmann Trains Durango and Silverton - Freight Ready-to-Run Large Scale Train Set Review

Bachmann Trains Durango and Silverton - Freight Ready-to-Run Large Scale Train Set
Average Reviews:

We have had a lot of fun with this train. Tender was defective out of the box. We filled out the Bachmann on-line form and received a functioning replacement 3 months later out of the blue. Annoyingly, the customer service rep we called (after receiving the replacement) stated that we had to pay to ship the defective tender back or else we would be billed - we felt this was poor customer service since the unit has a limited lifetime warranty and was defective out of the box.

After founding the town of Durango, Colorado in 1880, the Denver & Rio Grande Railway began construction of a rail line the following year that connected their new community to nearby Silverton. Designed primarily to haul gold and silver from the San Juan Mountains, it is estimated that more than $300 million in precious metals have traveled the line throughout its history.

Bachmann Trains Usra 0-6-0 with Smoke and Slope Tender - Nyc 1430
Average Reviews:

This train is not well made. It ran fine until we put the oil in and then it was all choppy like the oil was shorting something out under the hood. After a few months the wheels on one side got out of whack - the push rod went up when it should have been down. Could manually fix it but after several times the plastic fake piston on the front broke off too. It could be glued - but you get the picture.

Great, durable starter set. Pieces are solid and include everything to get started. Most of the starter kit price goes into a high quality engine, cars, connectors and transformer. No additional scenery or additional track. These would need to be additional purchases. If you are planning to keep this for a number of years and is not a "throw away" toy, then this is a good choice. My two (almost three) and four year old love the set. We purchased the upgraded version with the bell and whistle so make sure you get the set with the train sounds.

In the era of high speed, discover this miniature train, which gives the third dimension to the images of ancient prints that have always fascinated me for the enthusiasm emanating thinking of the first passengers who suddenly met the future, is how to make a jump in the past. Compared with the trains today, looks like a toy, but his whole look is a masterpiece of simplicity to the early days of steam traction. The box, then, reminiscent of those that once contained a wonderful toy for a few lucky owners. The painted figure on the lid already introduced to the magical world of the railroad (and the coal soot that was deposited on the faces and clothes, was the real cosmetic amalgamating the passenger with the train).

Lionel Santa Fe 0-4-0 Switcher Review

Lionel Santa Fe 0-4-0 Switcher
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great Lionel Train to play with. However it does not smoke worth anything! It came with sound which was not advertised in the description so that is a big plus. It also has to figures in the cab for more detail. The lights work well and it has a great back up light. If anyone knows how to turn up the smoke unit it would be nice to find out how to do it. One point of intrest is the fact that Lionel has forgot that children save their money to buy new product and they are not producing trains in the price line that kids can afford.

Bachmann Trains Pennsylvanian Ready-to-Run Large Scale Train Set Review

Bachmann Trains Pennsylvanian Ready-to-Run Large Scale Train Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bachmann was the first company to make Large Scale (Garden-Sized) trains available for a reasonable price. The locomotive pulling this train has been redesigned about six times since those days, and the coaches have been upgraded, too.
Bachmann has offered this set as a "special offer" or "limited edition" from time to time, but it is now available as part of their 2009 lineup. The train is big enough to draw attention in your back yard, or to cause jaws to drop if you put it around your Christmas tree. If you get this to run outside, though, save the track for indoors - you'll need sturdier track, like that from AristoCraft, to hold up to real weather.

Lionel G-Gauge A Christmas Story Train Set Review

Lionel G-Gauge A Christmas Story Train Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Even going in with low expectations for this train, it still disappointed. I knew I was getting a cheap, overpriced plastic train, but I was hoping the Lionel name would make it better than the $50 hardware store variety of trains. I was wrong. The one I got was very loud running on the tracks (not a tolerable/natural sound either) so you could barely even hear the cheesy recorded sounds that you are supposed to be listening to. My wife and I thought about returning it and getting another in hopes that it was a product defect, but decided that even if the loud track noise was remedied it was still too low of quality for the price. Bottom line. If you want a cheap plastic train there are cheaper options out there. If you want a quality train, this isn't it. Just for the record we did end up buying a regular O scale Lionel train and it is fantastic. More expensive and smaller than we were hoping, but much better quality. Not sure why Lionel allows their name to be placed on this product.

Bachmann Trains Durango and Silverton-Passenger Ready-to-Run Large Scale Train Set Review

Bachmann Trains Durango and Silverton-Passenger Ready-to-Run Large Scale Train Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a classic model of a classic locomotive and passenger car set. The last issue of this product has been unavailable for about 2 years. Now it has been brought back so a new "generation" of garden railroaders and "Rio Grande" fans can enjoy it.
The Denver & Rio Grande Western (D&RGW) started as the Denver and Rio Grande, a narrow gauge railroad with small equipment and big ambitions. The D&RGW eventually became the largest and one of the longest-lasting narrow gauge railroads in the world.
This train represents the Silverton Branch line, which was carved out of sheer canyon face high in the Rocky Mountains. This train is pulled by the popular Baldwin 4-6-0 steam locomotive (with operating headlight, smoke and speed-synchronized sound).
The yellow and black "bumblebee" paint scheme became popular in the twentieth century. The locomotive pulls two passenger cars that represent the best any railroad had to offer between 1860 and 1889.
